I'll buy your bike in South America

I'm heading to Ecuador in March and will be leaving my new GS Adventure here in the States. I may drive my Landcruiser down there or ship it, either way I'd like to buy your bike so that I can ride to Ushiaia eventually. I'd like something that can haul my wife and I comfortably.

What I was thinking is I buy your bike then I could send the title to the States and have a title service company transfer the bike into my name and then forward the title to me in Ecuador or wherever I'll be.

Does this sound realistic??

Technically it's not legal but in practice it should work. I am assuming that you will be buying a US-registered bike in Ecuador. You will need the new title, plates, and registration, and will have to cross a border to get a TVIP from the country you cross into, in your case either Colombia or Peru. I doubt that you can get a TVIP any other place than a border crossing in Ecuador. The bike will not be legal in Ecuador until you re-enter and obtain the new TVIP, which in Ecuador is good for 90 days. Colombia will give you usually 30-90 days, although you can legally have a foreign bike there for six month per calendar year. Peru I think is 90 days, at least.

You cannot permanently import vehicles into ecuador unless they are of the same year that you are importing them in so 2012 models have just another month to begin the process. you can buy a klr650 for an exorbitant price and a bwm or katoom for 20-30 grand. I paid 1500$ for my china bike and am loving it though its a bit small for 2 up we do it all the time.
Perhaps you can rent one from freedom bike rental.
