Dallas to California , Need help in planning

Hello All,

Me and my wife plan to be on a road trip starting next week from Dallas to CA. I need help in

1) What route to take from Dallas to CA and back
2) Must ride / must watch in and around CA

hyw 1 is in my list. Have done it last year in a car from LA to Montery but would do it again this time

We would not want to do offroad, would prefer scenic routes and twisties. I will be on vstrom 650 with passenger.
and we have 16 days in hand...

Any help would be appreciated..

California is a big place. What parts do you want to see/go to ?
Whatever; you probably will do best by heading out on I-20 west to where it joins I-10.

What acejones said. Where do you need to end up in California? That will change the routing quite a bit. For example, do you need to be in San Diego, or San Francisco?

Also, camping or motels?

SFO. However while return would like to visit Sandiego if time permits. Camping + motels . Would not be able to camp every day

Favorite place I've ever taken a motorcycle was northern California. Check out the Avenue of the Giants.

You may have already left on your trip....but how about this:
-I-20 from Dallas, then take 285 north to Carlsbad. Check out Carlsbad Caverns.

-Continue on 285 to Roswell, look for aliens, then 70/380 to I-25. North to Socorro, then take 60 then 12 (check on the weather first!). Then take 180/191 to Show Low. Again, check on the weather first.

-From Show Low, head north to I-40. Take I-40 to Kingman, then head north on 93 to Las Vegas. From Las Vegas, take 95 to Beatty, then from there 374/190 through Death Vallley.

-From 190, head south on 395 and take 178 to Bakersfield. Then make your way to the coast and Hiway 1 via 58.

You should be aware that highways 108, 120, and 4 (crossing the Sierras) are already closed for the season. Thus, your paths to the bay area from eastern California are more limited. If you go farther north, 50 is still open as is I-80. But those may be pretty far north for you to go.

Thank you all for the details, unfortunately I did see your post before we started. However we covered some of these areas.

I have started a RR here:
