Who's already decided they're buying a KTM 390?

So who else has basically already decided that they're going to buy this thing if KTM sends it over to the US?

306lbs dry, 44hp fuel injected thumper, switchable ABS, fully adjustable WP cartridge suspension front and rear, and an estimate US price of $6,500? Sign me the fuck up for that!

Only possible way it could get any better is if they do an enduro version.

A 690 Duke has about 50% more HP and about 10% more weight...and still has all the WP goodies. What's so good about the 390? It's just a different sized Duke. All are lightweight naked street bikes.

400cc street bike has merit in EU but is kind of useless in the US.

Hell yes, count me in! Read TerryTorri's thread on the (1st Gen) 690 Duke. The 390 hits all of the right buttons for me despite the performance of the 690, and will be a great all-around small-mid displacement (373cc) application.

Also, original specs from India had a non-adjustable front suspension. I hope that the new quoted specs for fully adjustible WP front and rear are correct - they will totally justify the proposed price over a Ninja 300R or Honda CB500-R/F/X, which will be the primary competition in this displacement category.

If memory serves, the 1st Gen Duke 690 was priced at $9,500, so again lb/hp aside, the 390 Duke will be more competitive in the US market place. At almost $10k, the 690 has a lot of competition (e.g. Street Triple R).

That's not to say that I don't like the 2nd Gen Duke 690 - I love the bike. However, the 390 is supposed to be offered in the USA, while the 690 has so far failed to make KTM's import list the the States.

So, Import the 390 and I will buy it!

The Enduro Version is already here: 350-EXC-F or 350 XC-F.

Get used to it - Bajaj bought a big portion of KTM as part of a global strategy: Development capital and cheaper production capacity for KTM, technology for Bajaj. The first objective: conquer the Indian sub-continent (and leverage the products in other markets - hence Duke 390 to USA???).

Man, what a thread full of haters.

Most of the other bikes people are comparing it to cost 50% more, closer to $10,000. The appeal of this bike is fun performance at an excellent price point. I can't figure out why the US has this whole penis-compensation thing going on where people insist on big engines.

I'm not sure if it is entirely penile deficiencies. Out west a lot of the roads are long and straight.

Unless you ride strictly in town, many of which are at least an hour from the next one, riding on the street is in a straight line at a constant RPM. Not much fun on a small bike, not much fun on any bike really.

It's a cool rig but there just isn't much of a purpose for it around here. Being a hooligan isn't very attractive when you know you'll likely be the only person around with that model, or that genre of bike for that matter.

Hooligan's sell very well in the USA! Super Duke, Speed Triple, etc.

Smaller bikes are making a resurgance, and for the first time in history, 80% of our population live in urban and suburban environments.

Small-to-mid sized bikes are making a resurgance, and the KTM-390 is the high-quality runner in the race!

Are they the same motor? Looks quite different in the pics. It would have to be a mill designed to do a lot more more miles than an EXC-F. At 44hp that could really appeal to some people with the right trailbike chassis wrapped around it, something like a WR250R with more balls.

It's not a dick measuring contest, if the 690 creates 50% HP with only 10% extra weight, the 690 is going to hall balls and the 390 isn't going to feel that much lighter. Sure, it'll be cheaper, but I'd be willing to pay for the extra ponies of the 690 if I were going to buy a Duke unless there was something else that made the 390 stand out more from the 690. Despite the numbers, it's nothing like the difference between a KTM 350 race bike and their 690R Enduro. In that case, double displacement means a substantial weight gain and the bikes are essentially two completely different rides...and you can make a clear case for owning both those bikes at the same time really. The 390 and the 690 Dukes are just so alike and the 690 gets pretty rave reviews from dirt riders and sport riders alike. My two cents.
