Motorhome toy hauler w/ V10 gasoline

Thinking about buying a used 05-08 class A or class C, 32-37 ft motor home w/ a 8x10 garage in the rear.

Would like diesel but even the 4-6 yr old MH w/ such a motor is bigger $ than I want to pay.

Seems the other choice is the Ford V-10. Anyone know much about these power plants ? Good news or the bad is much needed.

got one in our 36ft coach. works great, and its no that bad on gas. we have the banks power system on ours too.

Have a v10 in a 4500 chassis for our Class C. The motor runs quite strong. MPG around 8. Might get 9 mpg at 55 mph drafting a semi downhill.

Last time I drove a V10 it got exactly 6 miles to the gallon. Buy the diesel or save until you can-- my advice.

THe Ford V10 is a strong engine, but it gets shit mileage, even in the pickups. You'd be much better off saving for a diesel. At least with a diesel you may occasionally hit double digit mileage, you'll never see that with a gasoline engine, unless you mount a sail and learn to tack down the interstate.

Only the 01's and older.......there was a head redesign in the middle of the 2001 model year that corrected the issue.

The Ford v-10 is an excellent engine. The price you will save over the diesel will buy a lot of fuel.

as stated get the redesigned heads. It depends on how you are going to use it. If you are going to drive lots of miles from rally to rally or something like that then get diesel. If you are going to head south for the winter and stay in one spot or one area for a while, drive under 10K miles a year then gas is better.

Diesel at 8 mpg 10K miles $4.00 fuel is is 5K

Gas at 5 mpg 10K miles 3.50 fuel is 7K. how many years will the difference in purchase price between diesel and gasoline take.

I have observed the quality of the body and other parts is much better on the diesel units too.

I have an 05 Itasca Cambria by Winnebago 24 ft. We try to follow the rally scene towing 2 bikes and also visit sunny Florida in the winter....it gets between 9-10 mpg...The chassis is E3500 and the v10 has covered 87,000 trouble free miles from Colorado to Florida and pretty much all states in between...best rig I have owned and I would not change to a diesel...If you can....... always go for the newer rig..they produce a few more H.P and that is always a good thing....

Whatever you don't get one with a cummins, as for the v10 its gonna be thirtsy but you're pushing aton of air in front of it.

Stay away from ford diesel, on other hand Cummins is a good engine. Unless you going to drive 35K miles a year buy a diesel RV.

I pull my toy hauler with a V10 F350 ford with no issues, those a great motors.

Let say you hurt the diesel and is not hard to do, the replacement cost could be up to $16K, gas V10 is a $4500.
Fuel consumption will not effect you much if you drive 10K a year vs extra cost at front for diesel powerplant.
Diesel maintenance is a more than gas and anyone and his brother can work on the gas motor.

I got 347K miles on my 06 F350 V10 and this truck pulls full time,no issues except normal wear.
Don't be afraid of the V10, change oil and drive, those engines like clean oil.

In a past I had 05 f350 with 6.0 pos in it and by time I hit 100K miles I had 7 egr coolers, two turbos, countless injectors and 3 new engines installed under warranty.All repairs add up to total cost of $84K all covered under warranty, I guess ford make a killing on this $41K truck,.

I drive a Becker Excursion and it averages less than 11 MPG. I think this a Ford 4.6 with a couple of extra pistons.

I have a 99' Southwind 32V with a big Ford V10, Full Banks exhaust package and chipped. It is really nice to drive, passes other motorhomes and trucks going over mountain passes. Pulls my boat or the jeep with ease. If I keep it under 70 on cruise I regularly get 10 MPG. Towing the jeep or boat or running faster it gets 6 to 8 mpg. Not bad at all and so far no mechanical issues. I keep the oil and filters changed. Great chassis.

My last motorhome was a Dodge 390 that got as good as 8 and as low as 6 and it was only 22'. We are very happy with the V10 and we got a killer deal on it though in todays market you will likely get even a better deal on one.
