Can anyone comment on how powerful the R1200R 'feels'? I've read that the 1200GS feels like riding a tractor, while strong and predictable it's not exactly an exciting ride. Is the 1200R engine tuned for more performance?

I've had both and they feel the same to me. And it doesn't feel like a tractor. It's a 100hp motor that pulls strong from down low. The GS and R are very sporting bikes. Don't let the GS haters fool you!

I can't comment on the difference b/n 12GS and 12R but I can on 12RT and 12R. There's a world of difference b/n the two. While still powerful in its own right, RT didn't compare with R in how the power's delivered to the wheels. Same motor but the difference of 100 lbs of so in curb weight is very noticeable which makes the R a much more exciting ride.

Having sold the R1150GS a few weeks ago, I've been shopping for something used in premier condition to join my R1100S that isn't a budget buster. Although $14K+fees for a 2013 R1200R isn't chump change (local dealer has one in stock priced at $15,165), I sure like the looks - especially in the new Montego Blue color. One concern is that the "R" fuel tank is just 4.8 gal capacity (similar to my S-bike) which isn't ideal for all day backroad rides where stations are infrequent. Has this limitation been an issue for you guys?

Thanks to those who have answered a couple of my questions already, but I have a few more about the R1200R!
Suspension, I'd love to be able to stiffen it for faster canyon riding or loaded 2-up trips. I am extremely unfamiliar with BMW's telelever, so what tuning options do you have with the front? How about the rear? Would the bike feel undersprung for a 185 lb me? Speaking of fast canyon riding, what is the first hard part to drag on the 1200R? Can they be leaned over pretty aggressively? Those cylinders are so...far out. What servicing would I have to involve the dealer for? ie, special tools required or computer codes that need to be reset. Thanks! |

I feel the rear spring needs to be stiffer. I weigh 200 lbs. I will probably have the rear spring replaced this winter. I think the front spring and both shocks are fine. Mention shocks on a BMW board and you will be told they last 30,000 then you need Ohlins. I disagree. My RT still has original shocks. Front spring was replaced. Rear is showing signs of wearing out. Ohlins are not the only shock. On the R1200R No adjustments in the front, rear is adjustable for preload and rebound. I find the ride to be excellent for me or two up. I do not like my bike beating the crap out of me. Everybody is different. The R1200R is the best BMW built yet. David
