Does anyone have any experience with this camera? I am fairly new to cameras but it seems like this would be a good one for under $500. With options for different lenses.

It's the previous generation camera (the new one just has some better control features) but you get all the lenses.

You can also get a refurbished J1 with the 10-30 for under 300.

I've only played around with them but they seem like nice cameras.

I'd look at Micro 4/3 stuff from Panasonic or Olympus for lens choices (you can adapt nearly any lens ever made to them), or Sony RX100 if you just want a good adaptable pocket camera. I'm still using a Panasonic G1 from several years ago, all the latest M4/3 lenses will fit, as will my Leica lenses from 50-60 years ago (with an adaptor). Nikon's selection is thin comparatively and you're locked in to their stuff. Sony NEX5, 6, and 7 also have some adaptors available and take great photos.

I wish I could say yes! I don't have any experience other than putting greasy finger prints on the demo models in stores.

I just picked up a V1 for the girlfriend. She really loves it. Just started playing with it. So far the Cat has had about 1000 photo shoots.

I have been shooting with a Canon 40D for a few years. It's nice albeit a bit bulky for moto use. The Nikon should fill this roll a bit better. I think it has a lot of pluses. We'll be taking it on a Baja moto run shortly. A good test.

It should do what what we need it to do very well. There are a few things that I wish it had though. GPS is one, wireless transfer is another and panoramic shooting. None of these are show stoppers though. GPS coords can be dealt with, USB works and lots of software can stitch photos.

I forgot about a panaramic feature... I think that would be a great option for any camera...

As for the 4/3 camera mentioned above. That looks like the size I would like. A Panasonic G2 Lunix is for sale in the others section in the flea market. This looks pretty nice and I am thinking this would be a good option. But I would still like to hear more about the Nikon 1 if anyone has any. Or this could just be a general discussion thread on the camera.

I have a J1 and all the lenses. The new 18.5mm f/1.8 should be delivered to my mailbox later today. :). So far my favorite is the 10mm pancake. It takes some fantastic photos.

From what I have read, the Nikon is a very good LITTLE camera.

It is held back by slow lenses. The 18.5 is a good start to a decent line of lenses.

It also seems to me, the thing is being marketed poorly. It seems they are selling it as a fashion item rather than a pretty good small camera in its infancy as a camera system. That might be the downfall to the camera(s).

Do not discount the importance of sensor size to picture quality. I would definitely be looking at a 4/3 system over the Nikon 1. They just chose to put such a small sensor in the dam thing..too bad.

Something that helped persuade me toward the Nikon was its speed. Getting the moment counts for a lot. It can also shoot 10fps. The reviews mentioned that it was one of the better ones for catching moving subjects. Motorcycles in our case.

In all honesty I liked the Sony 5N a bit more. It was the sensor size between the 2 that kept me on the fence. I've gotten better at shooting though. Hoping my increased skill can compensate.
It was a last minute decision to get the V1. No regrets about it.

I'm not sure if I got a 'deal' or not. I paid $800 for my kit. That included the 3 standard lenses - the 10, 10-30 and 30-110. It also included 3 UV filters, 32g sd, a fish eye, telephoto, shutter remote and a really nice camera bag. And the things you'd expect - cords, battery etc. Got it from Amazon.

As that article noted, the cameras biggest down fall was its original price. People will be ok with a smaller sensor - as long as the price reflects that.

I'll be doing some hands on with it in 2 weeks.
