R100GS Speedo removal

I have a 1990 R100GS (non-PD version) with speedo only.

I want to get the speedo out for servicing but I don't know how to dis-assemble the fairing surrounding the speedo & headlight. It is a masterful puzzle.

Can someone please tell me how to remove the fairing assembly & get the darn thing apart??
Cheers!
Stephen

If your hands are skinny enough you should be able to do it without taking apart the fairing. There are 2 plastic nuts holding the retainer that should come off with no tools, speedo cable which may be a little tough by hand and a light bulb. Otherwise remove the windshield, remove side panel and turn signal. The signal is going to remain attached to the wiring harness but it and the side panel can be moved out of the way. Then it's right there easy access.

I forgot about the center screw that joins the 2 fairing sides. You have to take both side panels loose and rotate them to get that out.

That's a non-PD.Had the same bike/year for 17 years then bought another one as a project last year. 4 screws in the back of the headlight/speedo holder and the front cover/windscreen will all come out together. You'll need a long Phillips screwdriver to get at them, they are quite recessed in the back. Preferably a magnetized screwdriver or be careful the screws don't fall out and disappear.

When you are in there...inspect the wiring loom coming out of the housing toward the frame, well known problem with them the casing cracking and then later the wires breaking.

Need parts....pics? Near new speedo in MPH? I have one of them bikes in pieces in Canada, not worth the expensive full rebuilt it needs so may go on Fleabay eventually.
