Austin, TX: things to do

Im still in Austin. I leave Saturday.
I went on a great ride to the three sisters yesterday. Unfortunately they like to do road work on the weekdays, so some of the good sections were down to one lane with a lead vehicle. But still fantastic landscape and roads to get out and back from the three sisters.

I have been exploring many of the eating locations you all have mentioned. threadgills is certainly on the list.

This will take you through the Bastrop State Park, site of the huge wildland fire of Labor Day, 2011.

Mike, you mentioning being close to Fonda San Miguel reminded me of the regular lunch.

If you read the whole thread (don't bother) you'll see that we meet at Billy's at 11am and over at Hot Rod's coffee trailer around 12:30. Some folks hit one and some hit both. The last few pages have the locations. As does the first page, at least for Billy's

Hey everyone. I am back in NY as of yesterday. I want to thank all the inmates who helped out and gave suggestions

I was able to visit many of the places suggested and got some great riding in the Hill Country. Unfortunately my budget only allowed for a 2-day bike rental, but I wish i could have done much more. But that leaves next time, and I will save all these items that i didnt do this trip.

I wish I could have met some of you in North Austin for that meetup thursday, but I had already returned the bike and would not have wanted to show up in a cage.

If any of you are ever in the NYC area I would love to help out with things to do/see.

Reviving this thread a bit...

90% chance I'll be down there in April for the MotoGP race; any recommendations on lodging? Looking at two options - lodging close to the track, and lodging close (stumbling distance) to an abundance of tomfoolery. Of course, tomfoolery near the track is even better.

The area near the track is - how would you say, across the tracks, so to speak. Beer joints and park n fights mostly. Best bet for semi-refined tomfollery is to stay in Austin. The best bet for track access is Bastrop or one of the other towns to the east. I live east of the track and the 50 mile drive to the F1 Race took about 65 minutes door to gate, including the bus ride from lot Q. I doubt that moto gp will draw the 265k people who attended the three days of F1 races, but they are not likely to have the army of school busses available either.

From Bastrop take Hwy21 to FM812. Follow the signs to Elroy, about 20 miles.
