Well I finished cleaning the XR up last night, and put it all back together for the inaugural startup after being in pieces.
Took about 5 kicks but I'm almost certain that is just my ability, as it took that long beforehand too (still haven't quite got the hang of kick starting). Idled fine though the decompresser cable attachment on the head kept rattling which was annoying and there was a small oil leak from where the outlet pipe joins the frame, under the fuel tank there. So I took the tank off, and tightened up the nut holding the pipe to the frame and it just sheared off. Super annoyed, off to buy another pipe I guess. |

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...13870&page=419 The DC regulator doesn't regulate to 12 V DC very well without a battery to store some charge. At least, that is what I've read on the internet Looks like you have some issues with your kit beyond the brake light trouble . I'd recommend finding out what your stator lighting coil will output before making any changes to the circuit.I used to think my BD DS air box wiring was terrible, but after seeing the recent photos of other XRs, I don't feel so bad anymore

I've searched near and far and can't find the float level specs for my 97 xr600. I ordered a service manual but it won't be here before the weekend. Can some one post it up when they get time? Thanks

T4,
Looks like I'm diagnosing a start problem in that photo of my bike huh? ![]() Nope, just helping another inmate with his stator/start problem by duplicating a voltage measurement of the lighting coil with an AC meter. You have to read back some more pages in this thread to see the stator discussion. My soon to be 29 year old XR is currently running as well as expected given Honda's reputation for reliability. Only time starting is an issue is when temps drop below 40F. On those winter mornings when I know it will warm up enough during the day, I just place a small electric space heater on a box next to the bike's engine and warm it up a little while I get ready. The bike usually starts with the first decent swift kick (after performing the thumper priming/positioning drill). You don't want to know about my jetting, its unique to the dual carb RFVC XR5s.

float level 14.5mm or 15mm or a bit more or less...most of us just go by the float being parallel when closed...
good way to do this is turn carb body upside down...measure at middle of float to the carb body edge...it should be parallel...when closed also check float valve operation and sealing by blowing through the gas tube and manually pushing the float up and down if it seals correctly when parallel and you can see the float valve spring tip actuate and move freely you are good to go cheers |

I recently aquired an XR600
the seller posted it as an 85 and it turned out to be an 86 yes, my bad, I did not pay attention enough in GA up to and including model year 85 is easy to register anything newer is a pita going on impossible now I am pondering wheather to restore and keep or to part out bike fires up and once in the mid-range sounds fine, fairly unmolested and unabused basis for a full restoration to stock beauty I like this XR600 but love my XR250s what would you do? ![]() ![]() ![]()

What would you guys recommend as a aftermarket exhaust for a XR600 with FCR40, wiseco 11:1 and Hotcam?
Just the header by the way. |
