muffler sounds
I don't know. The sound at idle is OK but when the throttle is blipped, it sounds like someone's passing gas
. I've had an 08 and a '10 GS and those mufflers sounded much better than this one.

I think the difference is that we are hearing an engine that spins up a lot faster than the previous boxer motors. Also an unloaded engine is going to sound a lot different than when you are riding. Have you really stood behind your bike and had someone rev it to 6k or more and listened to it? I know I haven't. Also, it seems that this engine was probably cold, which could also impact its sound.

I think we are all quite excited about the bike and one little thing we hear, we start o dissect. Nothing wrong with that, I am glad that we are hashing everything, 'cause that keeps me entertained.
My take on these two issues - sound and smoke are that it's premature for any conclusion. I like the leaf blower sound at idle, not sure If I like the reving sound though. Of course recording devices make a big difference as someone already pointed out. When riding you won't necessarily hear it with ear plugs, so it doesn't matter. But then again, there is Akropovic (sp) exhaust to fancy your needs. |

The amazing thing is that they drink so little oil.

On 2004 R1200C, when I stop the engine, I stay on it for about 30-60 seconds and then put it on the side stand, to allow oil to drain below instead into the left cylinder. This consumes less oil. Now if I put it on the side stand immediately after turning ignition off, it can consume about a quart for 3,000 miles. Furthermore, it also becomes little harder to start due to accumulation of oil in the cylinder. |

What problem? I've owned oilheads/hexheads since 1995 and have only added oil one time between changes.

I have a R1200GSA and an HP2 Sport, neither burns any measurable amount of oil. The HP2 was raced for half it's life (before I got it) and it shows no change in oil level in the 4-5000 kms that I put on it each year. The GSA is changed at 10,000 km intervals and it hasn't used oil since the first 8000. My K100RS goes 7500 kms between changes and the drop in oil level at the sight glass is also not measurable. Just don't park it on the side stand, especially after making a hard left turn. If you allow it to cool down a bit chances are you will see some serious blue smoke - along the lines of an old ringding two stroke from the 60's.

That picture looks just like a space alien standing on a flying wasser-boxer, warding off all foes with palm-beam death rays.

If your current boxer uses a lot of oil it either hasn't done at least 12000 miles or it was pampered too much when it was being ran in. Boxer engines that have been pampered too much will always burn oil and there is only one way to fix it. Get the bores honed and re-ring it then give it some while breaking it in.
