I have nothing against electric starters, in fact on a big high compression engine it's likely the only way to go. But on a relatively modest compression single or twin? I don't think so. I bought a W650 new when the came out in the states (#1 on the list of bikes I never should have sold). I looked at it as well as the new Hinkley Bonnie at the time but chose the W because the level of fit and finish, the kicker was just sort of a perk. After about 15,000 miles I sold it (the 2-3 year restless
for a new bike thing, damn it). It had many charms but what do I miss the most? The kicker. Nothing quite connects you to a bike and turns it from appliance to a machine like a kicker. If you don't agree I believe 99.9% of the street bikes out there are in scope. On the kicker side I think we're down to Urals and Enfields. If they bring it in (I hope) leave it alone, the kicker will be fine for the crazy people who tend to buy new-old-school, like me.

All this talk of the "drill" to start is great, but there are times when no matter how closely you follow the drill, the F'n bike just won't start.

I had a vintage Triumph that if you followed the drill, including kicking through with the gas on, carbs tickled, ignition off, would start on the first kick with the key on, or not. 90% of the time yes, others you could kick till you were blue in the face, and it wouldn't start. Try again 20 minutes later and it would start on the first kick.

Same situation with the SR500, except once that one wouldn't start, you might as well wait till tomorrow, because it wasn't going to start easily.

Threw my back out several times trying to start the SR500, which is why I finally sold it.

2 stroke with kick start, great. No more 4 stroke thumpers without the button.

My first bike in 1965 had electric start (305 Superhawk), why not now?

I'm one of those who are firmly in the pro- kicker camp. I used to think I didn't want a motorcycle without a kicker, and given the choice between a kicker or e-start I'd take the kicker every time. I understand that most folks don't feel that way about it, so that makes it unlikely that Yamaha will bring a kick only bike to the states.

Kick start = anti theft device.

I miss my old SR500 which I rode all over the place, across west Africa in 1979 to Cameroon even. If this came out I would replace my Bonneville with one. I love the Bonneville but I would scale down for the joys of the new economy we live in.

That is one of the most beautiful bikes I've ever seen. I would be willing to pay a pretty penny for it, based on it's looks alone. It actually looks like a MOTORCYCLE, and would be 10 times more reliable than a Royal Enfield. Would probably seriously out perform one too. And for some reason REs are selling. It's impossible to find a discount on one, even though they are seriously overpriced for their poor quality.

Unfortunately too many people do not appreciate something like this for it to ever be profitable, so Yamaha is not likely to bring it here. While Honda's new CB1100 looks great, I would like it a lot more if it looked like this. Or the 1969 CB750. If it did, I'd be down at the credit union looking for a loan.

I think kick-start is just is one example demonstrating that progress can be a good thing now and then :) Now, I don't care if they keep it for 'authenticity', heck, it just might come in handy one day as backup... but given a choice, I'd never actually use it. is it lazy to use electric starter? Well, maybe - but then, isn't it lazy to ride a motorbike in the first place? If you're so athletic, hop on a bicycle.
