I am thinking about a scooter ride around cuba, anyone have any experience in this area? I think it would be a fun winter ride.

Thanks for the tip. I figured I would try the scooter site since I do not see any reference to scooters other than this site.

If you don't know about the US embargo against Cuba you might want to start there. There are ways around it but Cuba has limited Internet access and US credit cards cannot be used in Cuba. Fly there via Mexico or the Bahamas and take cash and have a true adventure. When you get back to the US any Cuban products are subject to confiscation and if Customs can prove you spent money there as a tourist you cna get into all sorts of hot water. Intimidation is the name of the game. Have fun.

I have already solved the issues you mention, I am just looking for tips on scooter rentals from someone who has rented a scooter while traveling in cuba.

don't worry about this, cubans know this so they will stamp a piece of paper and stable it to your passport, so when you return home you just trow that away, and you could fly from Mexico very simple.

Good luck on finding info I will be reading since it could be such a cool thing to do.

Sounds just like renting a scooter in Key West with the same mixed bag of skills by the renters.

The best Cuba thread is throttlemeister's right here on advrider.

Thanks for the threads, it seems like many of these people have little experience with two wheeled vehicles of any kind. I bumped into "fast eddie" who was an old key west scooter guy. He currently rents scooters in Quepos CR. He bailed out of key west before the cruise boat culture arrived. I am hoping I will hear from some person who has done a long term scooter rental and rode around cuba.

I can't wait for the embargo to end. I dream of loading my bike on a high speed ferry to mariel and spending long weekends riding the mountains of Cuba. That would make living in Key West about perfect, and honestly I'd rather live here than Quepos but thats just because I'm lazy and I have been here long enough to have found a suitable groove. And I avoid tourists on rental scooters and cruise ship passengers whenever possible!
I think until the last day of the stupid embargo comes to pass visiting Cuba by Americans is going to be an old fashioned seat-of-the-pants credit-card-free, internet-free adventure. I am encouraged by the charter flights from Miami but so far the embargo is just one more monopoly to benefit select Cuban Americans who charge outrageous money to funnel people and goods to the island.
