Front forks disassembly
Hi everyone.
Need some help with front forks disassembly on a 1997 AT. I like to clean them and change the oil and seals (never being replaced), but I have difficulties to loosen up the damper rod bolt. Mistake I did was not loosening them when the forks were on the bike. Now they are turning together with the damper rod. I’ve put back on the springs and compress them in order to make more pressure on damper rod but without success. Is it necessary to remove the dumper rod in order to separate the tube from the slider? Also there is some part moving inside the tube when it is compressed. If it is extended there is nothing moving inside. Is this normal or there is something out of its place? Thanks.

RD07 stock rear luggage carriers
Hola Amigos,
I have not posted in a long time and it is good to be back in touch ![]() I need a set of rear luggage carriers and really like the original ones... I have 2 Africa Twins (2003 RD 07) and ride extensively in South America. I have spent 3 months on the road this year and am presently in Tulua,Colombia. Home is Cuenca ,Ecuador. A trip is planned soon for 2 to 3 months in Brasil. The luggage carriers give excellent protection to the muffler and rear of the moto. I have made a tool box in stainless steel for the left side and find it excellent for the necessary tools. Does anyone have a pair of these around I could buy to fit out my second A/T the same way?? Any help much appreciated. davemacduf |

TLC,
Yes, it is necessary to remove the bolt that holds the damper rod into the lower fork leg in order to separate the leg from the tube and replace the seals. You are on the correct path. Put the spring and cap back on, turn the fork over so the damper rod bolt is at the top. The next step is key. You must use some sort of impact wrench to spin the bolt very quickly. A normal hand held wrench is too slow. A manual impact wrench (the kind you strike with a hammer) usually will work. If not, a air-operated one will do the job. Just push down on the lower leg to compress the spring at the same time you hit the impact driver. Once this bolt is removed the only thing stopping the tubes from separating is the fork seal. Remove the wire spring keeper above the seal and use the upper leg as a kind of slide-hammer to pop the seal out of the lower leg. To replace the seal, you can make a tool from two pieces of PVC pipe that is split in half. Put one each half around the upper tube and tap the new seal into place. |

Any info on the loose part inside the fork.? I think it just could be the rebound spring but I'm not sure.
