Groovers are pretty common in other forms of motorsports. The local dirt track stocker / sprint car guys use them frequently to tweak tires to track conditions. Some sand car paddle tires come with two different size paddles and are designed to have either the big ones or the smaller ones removed before use.

I'm really tempted to try grooving a 180/55/17 street tire to see how it works. Someday maybe.

Well it took me long enough but I finally did it. Nothing so radical but I think it's an improvement. What do ya think?
