Tyre pressure is to high , and that looks like wear and tear to me ,14-15psi let the tyre flex not skim on the rocks
Let it down about 2 psi at a time (about 2-3 seconds) would not go below 13 psi in rocky cond,

20psi for road
13-16 off road

I'd be inclined to agree with that (as an armchair expert), the E09 Dakar has an extremely hard case which would cause the tire to skip over rocks if pressure was too high.

As DRF suggests, get onto Mitas in Germany, through the Vendors section and pose the question to them.

Compound fault

I recall that a batch of E09 s had a faulty compund with thsi chipping issue at low Km. Ask the Mitas guy.

I have a E09 front tyre that I plan to give to someone I don't like. My rear E09 has 4000 km and might last another 1500 Km (on a DRZ400.)

Dakar

The recommended pressure for the E-09 Dakar is actually 40psi.

It's definately worth going to the Mitas thread in the Vendors section.

E09 premeture wear

Hi Mitas,

I had an E09 Dakar fitted to the rear of my 690 enduro prior to Christmas anticipating the dry rocky conditions in the Victorian high country. I've had one once before on my DR650 which I would have probably got about 6000km out of riding mostly Flinders Ranges type terrain.
We've had a fairly short day of 135km in steepish hills around Omeo today but I suspect something is not right with this tyre. I generally run about 20psi in the rear. It seems to be chipping badly and its happening on the drive side all the way to the root of the tread. I certainly havn't been doing anything different with my riding style. Last tyre I had on was a MT21 which did more than 4500km. I would expect the E09 to get at least that, but at this rate I've got buckleys of that. My brothers 690 has a D908 on it, same pressure etc and is nothing like this.
Can you shed any light on this please?

Thanks guys, I'll try about 15psi cold tomorrow and see how things progress. I've re-posted this in the Mitas thread to see what they have to say.

40psi offroad? You can't be serious?? 40psi may be the max pressure for fully loaded maybe.

By the way 40psi is the max pressure not recommended at 40psi this would have no traction but good for power sliding thou, man your eye balls will rattling around in your head ,
on road not a problem ,

?

I'm not disagreeing that 15psi would be good to run on. It will be interesting to see what Mr Mitas has to say about it all. Regardless of the pressures, that wear doesn't look right.

I must admit that it's been a while since I read the 40psi bit on the tyre..... Having re-read it, it's a "maximum load of 355kg @ 40psi"

I'd be looking at 18psi in the rear without rim locks.

Update.......

Here is a bit of an update after a couple more days ride. I am now running with 15psi cold.
Completed 440km now. The first post after 135km was fairly tame riding really.
Yesterdays 200km was alot more aggressive riding with lots of rocky sections.
Just as a comparison, the 3rd photo is my brothers D908 with 3000km on it, same bike, same tyre pressure. Similar rider etc. Think I know which one I would go for next. Maybe a different result in flat desert riding but when there is lots of hills and rock involved I wont be getting onother one. I would love to know how the MT21 would have handled it. I cant see it being any worse than the mitas. Oh and did I mention it doesn't do well in the mud

I`ve never run an MT21 on the back. From what I hear they are a good tire, but don`t wear very well; they don`t cost a lot so are probably worth a try.

Based on my experiences with Mitas and the Michelins made in Czecho, I think they have a quality control problem. Some tyres work great, and others have issues like separation and chipping. Its a bit of a lottery with them unfiortunately, because a good one is just that in its intended environment.

I am happy that the thread is in Vendor section as it is easier to find now.

As an aside, I tend to think that Mr Mitas was (apart from providing personalised service), using us as guinea pigs regarding experimentation feedback! ~> I am OK with that, as if it helps MItas improve their game, then it works for me.

Important Notice!!!

PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL
MITAS E-07 ‘DUAL SPORT’ TYRES: 19” FRONT TUBELESS SIZES

Mitas has identified a potential product safety issue associated with the tubeless seal of two sizes of E-07 tyres. Under certain conditions the tyre bead may leak air which could, in extreme circumstances, result in a rapid deflation of the tyre. Mitas has issued a voluntary recall of these tyres.

The issue affects all tubeless (TL) 19” E-07 tyres produced in 2011 and 2012, in the following sizes:

100/90-19 E07 Dual Sport TL 57T
110/80-19 E07 Dual Sport TL 59T

Please note that ALL stock of these sizes sold in Australia is affected. No other tyres are affected.

Now I know why I went arse up last August.
