Very fine steel wool, preferably stainless, with some WD40 as lubricant. You can get the stainless wool at a boat supply shop.

2mm larger than the '00

That's all that came up in a search, I'll be out in the garage tinkering on one of the bikes - I'll give mine a measure.

Good question...... My bike is on the cuss of '00 - '01... and if I could find the exact axle sizes for the two - I could see which model I have

Best kept secret in the moto world?

I looked in my service manual and also searched online to no avail for the diameter of the front axle bolt but used a different search and came up with the dimensions of the collars below.

2000 front axle COLLAR 15.1X20X70 ID OD length ????
2001 front axle COLLAR 17.2X25X69

Assuming the first dimension is the ID then the difference is 2.1 mm which is about what Kawasaki says.

I just giving these dimensions as a check for when you measure the axle. Maybe a very small mm difference between the collar ID and the axle OD?

You certainly did, a little set of saddle bag stand-offs if I remember right.

You sure don't want to follow me, because I'm lost as a goose. So far this year I've dodged the flu (knock on wood) but I've been bitten by some sort of "classic bike" bug in the worst way. So it's all about W650's, Bonneville's, the Moto Guzzi V7, and heck I don't know, maybe one of the Sportsters with mid-controls. Lord help me.

On an '01, are the front and rear axles the same size?

Thanks. It has been ridden. It's been from Daytona to Kentucky a few times mostly two lanes. I did a great trip to Los Angeles in October. Rode from Daytona to New Orleans to announce the season ending AMA Pro Road Race championship then on to LA to announce the AMA Pro Flat Track championship race and awards banquet. Great Interstate trip across I-10. Ran the bike 70 to 75 out and back. Never used a drop of oil. What a wonderful motorcycle. It does get extra special care from me and always has but definitely she gets ridden.
