New Garmin Montana

The map which comes with the Montana, topo 100k set, how is this different from City Navigator other then having topo’s?
Does it show all the roads and streets? Will I be able to find destinations by address, intersections, city names, what have you?
I don’t care much about the vender listings on CN but they can be useful.

I have it fixed and working. I used your advice, and did a bunch of other crap that I need to figure out again. I now see a nice track spanning the state of TN, YOU'RE THE MAN! Thanks!

Garmin's 100K Topo Map has everything in common with Garbage. The Garmin 100K TOpo Maps are known to be off by 300 feet or more, quite regularly. These maps are only intended to give you a very general idea of where you are on the planet, and include severely limited detail.

Garmin's 24K Topo maps are much more accurate, and are routable. They include most streets and highways, but are not updated four times a year like City Navigator maps are. If you want to the latest and greatest up-to-date routable information, City Navigator is your best bet.

I have never updated my copy of City Navigator. Updates must be largely vender updates?

Before you buy a map, look here for information about free maps that may do everything you need.

City Nav, if purchased on DVD, is eligible for the Garmin lifetime update purchase.

Today I downloaded the most recent JaVaWa Device Manager and plugged my Montana in and ran the application to see if anything needed attention. I found MGV4 was not visible in Basecamp so I changed that, and ejected the Montana.

Next time I booted the Montana, MGV4 was visible again in all Profiles.

I have been very satisfied with City Navigator and I never felt a need to update it. I don’t think I want lifetime updates; my experience is, the less I have to do with Garmin’s web site the better.

Thanks for the link; I’ll look at those free maps. But what I see me having is City Navigator and possibly a 24k topo map for specific areas.

Not what I wanted, but I kinda expected it. I don't think it has a mind of its own though, I figure it just thought it was a new map.

So, much like all GPX files on the Montana, each time it boots and detects any modification, the file is re-indexed and made visible in all profiles.

You would think they could leave this step out for maps, as the user gets to decide which maps are enabled/disabled, unlike other files on the Montana (GPX, etc), which most of us have been begging Garmin for the ability to enable/disable also, for quite some time...

I too wish it did not re-index after boot.

I suspect they chose the way they do it to avoid the "I just installed a map and it does not show up" support call.

How old is that? What year?

It will work, but many users have reported painfully slow search functions and routing functions with older Garmin topo maps on Montana.
