race
I'm 57 years old and race in the Forward Motion Hare Scramble series, (Kansas/Missouri, Senior class #1017). I only race 2 or 3 events a year anymore and it's mostly fairly tight woods, and a scramble is 2 hours long. . Like the other guys have said, limit your caffiene the morning of the race, and start hydrating alot a few days before the event. Be carefull what you eat the night before. It's very important to settle into a pace that is comfprtable for you. I usually ride at about 85% of my true ability which leaves a little left in the tank when I come across someone in my class and have to battle with him, or have to pass slower riders and have to work to do so. On your sight lap, look for potential cut lines, (legal) you could use if you come across a bottleneck. My goal is to never stop and I rarely do. Sometimes I may barely be moving after a nasty creek crossing where I might get stuck or have trouble, but I try to keep going. Pace yourself and you can always pick it up a bit as you move thru the race if you feel like it. I ALWAYS feel like I've been run over by a truck after the race and especially the next day at work, I'm damn near an invalid, but racing dirt bikes is some of the most fun I've ever had. Good luck. and report back how you did.

The ones I have done were the ATVMotion(Now OHSCS) in Oklahoma. They don't do sighting laps. Also what I've been told a few times is 25 yards to either side of the trail is ok in a bottle neck and not considered cutting. Now, probably clipping 25 yard shortcuts the whole time prob is considered cheating but to get around a bottle neck do what you gotta do within those limits. |

Hill climbs seem to be the worst. One guy doesn't quite commit and you end up with a parking lot. If you're going to half ass anything, make sure it's not a steep hill! ![]() On the subject of sight/practice laps, I don't find them to be all that useful. Except maybe for knowing when an "oh shit" moment is coming up (steep blind downhill, gnarly hill climb, etc). In mountain biking they are much more important because it affects your strategy to a large degree; if I know the top out on a long climb is coming up I can turn on the afterburners and drop/pass whoever is near me. On the moto as a noob racer I don't have the chutzpah or skill to do anything fancy strategically. Though I will say that traffic jams are thankfully rare in the enduros out here, and when they do happen it's because there is literally only one line to take (e.g. coming out of a steep, narrow wash) so there's not much to do but take a breather.

That was a fun race. It had some tighter sections than I was expecting (for wicomico).
How did you do?
