I need an ultra-sonic cleaner as well,I used to use them all the time when I was a dental tech, They get the tiniest pieces out of the smallest crevices much easier. Some shops have em big enough to clean a bank of carbs in,best way to clean carbs from what Ive heard.

Yep the same HF ultrasonic cleaner with simple green as the solution works great on carbs! They come out looking like brand new!

Glad to hear the bike's working out and nice pic! Im heading out into the icey wonderland that is nor cal on mine tomorrow morning,scouting out the snow level for a singletrack ride on saturday..

I just picked up an 09 200 XCW and only have a couple rides on it so far,truly a cheater bike for the tight woods.

What would be the recommended gearing for riding the TET (1000+ miles) on an '08 450 EXC?

I'd go 14/48, or nearly equivalent 15/51.

Much taller and it will struggle to pull 6th with wind/ grade unless you're flat out.

Im pretty sure my 530 will buzz to 100 with 14/50 gearing,for lots of singletrack I would have 13/50 on it.
65mph cruise is easy with 14/50.

Use caution with simple green and aluminum, it can oxidize the carb if left too long. I do believe they make an aircraft version that is aluminum safe, but I prefer to use a 50/50 mix of pine sol and hot water.

Pine Sol does a great job on carbs. I also use it 50/50, and just leave the carbs in it overnight. It won't attack any of the metals in the carb, but it is conductive enough to allow a little galvanic corrosion because of the dissimilar metals. The little bit of "bloom" you get on some of the parts will wipe off.

It would take the carbon off of biopig's valves, too; but it would take the paint off the head. Carb cleaner, a bottle brush, and elbow grease will get the exhaust ports clean enough.

I'm a *little* bigger than a lot of the guys out riding trails

, I went to 14/52 gearing on mine, and it's still a little tall on some of the tight stuff. Even with me on it, the front wants to come up a LOT on the street....

gotta be careful about that.....but it runs good enough to get from home to trail head.

Just did a test fit of my new compression ring in the cylinder. Measured end gap at 7 thousands, I was surprised it was so tight. Is this typical with new rings? Should I file to make end gap to around 15 thousandths. Anybody have any good links on how to file rings. My old measured at 30 thousandths, this was at 140hrs. Picture shows new oil ring compared to old.

Seems like the shop manual would tell you just what clearance to set it at? No point guessing.
