At the time HD made the decision to close Buell:
-HD was $55 million dollars in the hole
-There was a termination clause in the engine contract with Bombardier which cost HD over $10 milion.
-Bombardier was willing to cancel the termination clause for the rights to Erik's next sport bike which was still in development and the rights to the "Griffin", Erik's dirt bike prototype which was already in testing with pro riders
-Bombardier would have kept all the Buell employees, given Erik more freedom than he ever had with HD, and was prepared to invest more.

Can you imagine what Erik could have done with the backing of a company that already does creative shit like the Can-Am roadster? Remember that Can-Am was once a storied dirt bike company, the Griffin would likely have been the starting point to relaunch the breed.

For me though the biggest thing was the way HD shafted those employees when there was this offer and others that would have kept those jobs going. In the middle of a recession the wouldn't let someone essentially pay them $10 million to keep those people working, and instead paid the $10 million fee to Bombardier.

Money trail. I'm wagering the bean counters found a way that cost them less in the long run so the fee came out as a positive. Or they're retaining rights to something.

Could have also been that HD did not want a "made in America" competitor, even if the bikes were not comparable.

But Im guess you are correct. in business finance it is seldom the case that $1+$1 = $2

What HD execs said over and over was the product lines were too integrated to separate. My ass, not even assembled in the same building and Bombardier wanted the rights to bikes that weren't even in production yet, and didn't use HD engines.

Good reading on the subject:

Could be. Some companies have been known to sell at a loss to kill competitors. Lose now to gain much more later. It's all strategy and how to make the most money, hence the money trail comment.

If only to keep an external customer alive for Rotax, the wholly-owned subsidiary of BRP that makes engines for many (if not all) of BRP's products. If the deal had gone through, my guess is that BRP would have dumped everything but the 1125.

I'm not really into sport bikes, but he is #2 on my list of motorcycle people I would like to meet someday. A brilliant mind, combined with his passion, and he actually cared about all the people working for him.

I met him at an EBR open house during the 2010 Buell Homecoming in East Troy. Just a handshake and quick chat while he signed my Ulysses. Comes across as very genuine and has obvious passion for motorcycle development. I didn't witness it myself but there were pictures over on BadWeb of him helping a guy with some repairs in the EBR parking lot . Guy had a Tuber that wasn't running right, Erik pulled some used parts out of his stash for the guy to use if I remember correctly.

He is definitely better off without HD.

I covered it with a Clear Bra type plastic, seems to be holding up well.

Speaking of Go Pro, I just found out today that GP instituted a new initial purchase policy. We have to do a substantial purchase if we want to sell them this year. Group buy anyone?
