The one in Austria is a 950 motard, (2002 / 14.000 km / 4000 euro) does anyone knows the difference between the Motard and the Outback?

From the pics i've seen it looks like only the wheels are different, ie motard smaller fatter tyres then the outback, am i correct or are there other differences like suspension?

I also got a link from Max Red Kadett from a 2008 950 Motard in the Ukrain with only 700 km (!) for 11.000 USD.

Is there a difference between the years?


Being a 1990 africa twin rider for years my preference goes to an Outback but if the only difference is the wheel size then i could also buy a Motard and change the wheels...

I have been searching with the swedish term 'highland 950v2 till salu' (means for sale...) but no luck till now. I only get Microcars or sheep...
(yeah, yeah, riding sheep is cheaper...)

I have a 950 Motard, titled a '06 but was made before that. With it I got a factory brochure showing the specifications for the three versions of the 950. Supposedly the Motard has less suspension travel, even though they all have the same forks. As well as having wider 17" wheels, the Motard has a huge front disc and 4 piston Braking caliper. Mine came from the factory with the chain not clearing the tire. It still doesn't clear, even after taking a lot of rubber off with a block plane. There may be a 160 tire narrow enough to clear, but I haven't found it. I was told to space out the front sprocket, but the two sprockets seem to be in good alignment now. The rim is too wide for a 150 tire. I would like to lace up a narrower rim for a 150 tire, but so far I haven't sprung for it to solve a problem that never should have existed. How could the factory have sold a bike with the chain rubbing the tire?

I don't have a scanner, but I guess I can type in the specifications if you want them.

The biggest differnces are between 1999 and 2001.

1999 Carborater Model build before first stop of the company. They broke after the first 50 build motocycles.
2001 they began new. In this time the changed a lot of thing.

Piston, Cylinders, Starter mecanic, compete electronic, tank for injection system, from carb. to injection,
the plastic parts. ( They build around 250 Motorcycles)

So if it is one with injection you can buy the cheaper one. Thats my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, are there numbers known of how many bike's of each type where made? i.e. outback, motard and allroad? and in which country most of them where sold? Sweden or ?

Until 2003-2004 where built around 250 Motorcycles, but I don´t know how many motard, outback ....

Last year there were a total of 88 Highland registered in Sweden.

My 2003 highland started as a super motard with the big 6 piston billet front caliper. I sent the wheels to talon in the u.k. and they laced up 21" and 18" rims to my old hubs , they fitted but i had to shim the front caliper as it was hitting the spokes, i used 2 plain washers which wasnt that hard ! and looks just like an outback.
The suspension travel between the 2 models im not sure on but it works fine on my bike, any longer travel and you couldnt get on as it pretty high - im 6'.

One thing though i went for mx style width on the rims and although these are best for the dirt im now going to send them back and get the same width rims as ktm 990 adventure as i think itll suit it better for touring about.( and lots easier to fit the tyre)

There is NEWS. GOOD NEWS! US Highland is open again! I was at their new facility today. For the time being, they are focusing on building engines, but are planning to build complete motorcycles as soon as it is technically and economically feasible. They have a nice place, it's very near my current workplace, and I should be able to easily keep tabs on their progress. Hopefully, there are still some fans around, and we can get the interest back up. I will let everyone know what I know, when I know it. Cheers! JED
