I'm thinking about buying a .22LR AR/M whatever for Fe Girl.

Who has experience with them and what should I look for?

For plinking or do you want something more accurate?

You have stuff like the Umarex HK and Colt replicas as well as the Smith & Wesson MP15-22. Out of those the MP15-22 is probably the better of the bunch. These aren't really AR's but look like them. Very little is interchangeable with a real AR.

You can buy a real AR in 22LR as well. http://www.cmmginc.com/category_s/1516.htm I believe these use forged AR lower receivers and the AR trigger group. You could then swap out the extension and get a 5.56 upper.

Another option is to buy a complete AR lower receiver and then a dedicated 22LR upper.

The last option would be to get a 5.56 AR and then get a 22LR drop-in conversion kit. This would probably be the most expensive route and the least accurate (when shooting 22LR). If you're using it for training then this would be the preferred route though.

I was thinking of it as more of a toy!

Real AR component pricing is so far from from reality right now it is out of the question. I'm going to stand back and wait until some of these panic purchasers need to pay their bills and buy at distressed pricing.

I'd look at the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 then. Although if it doesn't have to look like an AR, I'd recommend going with a Ruger 10/22 and if you need it to look tactical, get a Nordic Components AR22 stock.

We have several 10/22's. What I really want is something that is dimensionally similar to an AR so that there is familiarity/muscle memory between platforms.

S&W M&P 15-22 gets high marks, there's also the Mossberg 751T.

Well, if you're wanting to have her transition into a centerfire AR then I suggest getting a CMMG AR15 .22LR. Otherwise, the S&W M&P15-22. None of the 22's function exactly like an AR. The biggest difference with the Umarex and S&W is that they use a plastic shell. So they have a completely different feel and balance to them. The S&W can at least use a mil-spec AR's trigger group and grip. You''re stuck with their rail but you can change the stock.

I love my Colt (Umarex) M4 - blast to shoot and cheap (wife has pretty much claimed it now).

Any tips on getting the little door open on the bottom of the magpul MOE grips?

I wedge the little tang back with a pen, but I can't get the damn thing open to install it.
