The very best military 98 Mausers were made at Brno in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars. I have some that were made for Persia in that time period, and the finish is comparable to the commercial ones.

Thinking about muzzleloader for hunting (better tag chances).

Found a T/C Firehawk in .54 with a red dot and some other odds and ends for $400. Black thumbhole stock in stainless.

Doesn't look like that model is produced anymore, but is that a reasonable cost? Aside from the obvious differences in weight, is there an advantage/disadvantage in a .54 over the .50?

I know little about them in general.

Check your local laws first. I know my brother can't use in-line blackpowder guns for deer. I think some states set cal size limits also.

The PNW has some strange laws, but nothing too bad. No sealed breech, no pellet powder, no centerfire primers, no scope or assisted (fiber optic) sites. WA/OR/ID are all the same - rules to keep it more "real". Caliber is not an issue either - .50 cal or larger for elk and deer.

What is it worth?

Just wondering what this might be worth. Got a guy wanting to trade an Inland M1 Carbine for it and just not looking to get burned on this.

Not too far apart really. I would put both around $650- depending on the shape that the M1 is in. YMMV.

I hope the lefties don't make the Remington 700 connection (the US military sniper rifle is based on one, or similar)! There is no need for civilians to have military weapons (like the rifle you want so much).

Also, you realize the 1911 was the US sidearm for decades? No reason you or I should be allowed to own military weapons!
1911's can be dangerous but a Trojan is safe enough to fuck with

That seems a little high. Black powder rifles are fairly inexpensive, even going through big stores like Cabelas. I just saw a T/C 50 cal stainless w/camo on Cabelas web site for $299. If you look around, there are some CVA's that are even cheaper (if price is a major concern).

I have a .54 cal Knight that is a blast to shoot, but maybe not as versatile as a .50 cal. The .50 would be a little better for long range, especially if you are shooting the 150 gr powder loads and saboted bullets. 50 cal components are easier to find in the stores. Either caliber will work on game just fine.

I do enjoy the .54. Shooting 500+ gr maxi balls is some good fun!

Seems high to me too. Also, you can find .50 cal components cheaper. I'm not a big fan of red dots for hunting.

i have a model 700 50 cal muzzle loader. here in nebraska the only rule is it has to load from the muzzle end. they're practically begging us to kill more whitetail.

50 or 54? 54 cal stuff is hard to find here. 50 you can buy anywhere and the deer don't seem to much care either way.

Depends on what you mean by "best" The world of 98k's is a very complex one....and in a general statement I would say the pre-war 98's to hold great value, there are some here and there that are much more valuable.

Now as to the best shooting guns....eh....here there same same.....given that the guns are in like shape they will all shoot about the same....a bnz is going to shoot with a byf is going to shoot with a dot.

The real shame is that place that sells them....I think the initials are MM. Biggest bunch of crooks out there....oh well now that the supply of 98k's are starting to dry up they can't rob people anylonger on those, but now are working the 91/30 and VZ angles.
