Walter, I'm reading your ride report from 1994 right now (that someone posted a link to earlier)... It is absolutely amazing. I have a feeling I will be missing quite a bit of sleep tonight attempting to finish it...

Anyhow, how did you guys communicate with the locals in China. Did you guys speak any Chinese? Or did most of them speak English?

Well we took a few Chinese lessons before we went - so could count from one to ten ... which in chinese means you can do any numbers. The counting system is incredibly simple and logical. Same with the grammar ... very very simple and logical. It makes other languages look ridiculously unnecessarily complicated and stupid. .... that is until you get to the writing side of it and the tonal nature of pronunciation - then the chinese side becomes the ridiculously unnecessarily complicated side. They seem to recognise this tho and teach their written language to their children via the latin alphabet (pinyin chinese).

James was fluent in Japanese, so he could basically read Chinese and understand it. (The characters have the same meaning in both languages even tho the words are totally different and unrelated). So he could read road signs ... "three mountain city" is left at the junction ... for example. He could read the basics on the menus. What dishes were pork, chicken, rice, etc. Again the characters were the same.

We were both quite surprised how quickly we learned it ... after 6 weeks in China, we were able to get just about anything we wanted easily and have conversations with locals. If you just ignore the complexity of the written language and just worry about speaking and listening, its not difficult at all.

That is some clever engineering which deserves to be trialled, especially if the cost is reasonable.

Quite reasonable i guess, M8 -> M10 sizes are around 1,5€ -> 2€ / pcs. here in finland.
