while the brunt of your post I find to be dead on...the problem with the previous generation Hyper's suspension is a real issue for some when you get into fine tuned subtleties. When you are accustomed to a road biased machine that has the suspension set up right, the pogo-ey nature of the Hyper not settling in a turn smoothly like a roadbike is offputting. Keep in mind, most that have issues with the Hyper's suspension, are generally going to be road only riders really. In those cases, I have seen people try all manner of different weight oils in the forks, different springs and valving, and various amounts of labor to try and get them right, and some never will be happy. That is somewhat the nature of the beast that you are dealing with in that machine. It will be interesting to see of the new gen Hyper carries some of those same traits, or how its manners are in regards to the road. In any other situation, all bets are off as the Hyper, despite marking hype and all, really isn't designed to REALLY be used for things like the Shenny 500, or Baja 1000, Dakar, Hatfield McCoys, are any haunts remotely looser than packed gravel/dirt. It just isn't the right tool for the job.

Here ya go
I'm 6' 0-1/2" and 225, with a 33-34" inseam. They had a Hyperstrada and SP up on a raised platform and nobody was going up there (unlike the crowds and lines to sit on any other Duc. Me and my girl just hopped up and had our way with both of them, said to be the only ones in the USA

Doesn't look like it offers a lot of wind protection. That's where the SMT would do a better job, I wager. It'd need a bigger screen, for sure.

Another contrast shot. The SMT
![]() The bars and screen are slightly higher and further forward, or maybe the seat and pegs are higher on the Hyper. At any rate, the Hyper definitely felt more traditional supermoto, while the KTM seems like it would be a little better for touring. really need to ride both back to back, although I'm sure that because it's narrower, the Duc would be more nimble and better suited to the inseam challenged. |

So I've been comparing the Hyperstrada to the SMT990 'cause they fit the same roles. I can't imagine why anyone would want the SMT instead of the Hyper, on paper at least.
![]() The Duc is/has: >cheaper >MUCH longer service intervals >more fuel efficient (projected) >larger dealer network in the US >standard centerstand and bellypan >single side swingarm (convenience; looks are subjective) >more comprehensive electronics package >slipper clutch The KTM is/has: >lighter >better suspension (from what I hear) >larger fuel tank >??? Anything I am missing? The bike isn't even out yet, and we will get a better idea of what it's about when the reviews start coming in later this year, but so far it seems better in almost every way than the SMT. When I am in the market for a new bike, it's probably going to come down to these two, unless I had a adv bike epiphany.

The KTM SMT is listed as 434 lb "weight without fuel". With 16l fuel (Hyper's tank size) the KTM will already be slightly over, add 8 to 10 lb for the accessory center stand. Looks are subjective but except for the beak, to me the HS looks better than the SMT. |

I suppose projected was a poor word to use. I am assuming it's got better mpg than the LC8 (which gets around 35mpg on average) because Ducati says their new motor is designed with reliability and efficiency in mind. It's all hearsay, of course.

Well my 14 year old aircooled 2 valve gets 40-45mpg pretty consistantly this had better be able to do that.
