Finally caught up with the ride report!

You have been an inspiration, Radioman. So much of an inspiration that I finally decided to do a ride here in my country alone for around 2000 kms and had a great time!

Happy New Year!

Mark,

I discovered your ride report a few weeks back and have been glued to it ever since. I did not rush reading, wanted to really take it all in, thoroughly immerse and understand everything you have been through, bad and good.
It now feels as if I had lived part of your life, understand and relate to the loss of your beloved wife, though I have lost mine after 25 years, not to death - it feels almost same. I admire your strength and faith in recovery.
You are such a uniquely rare person who understands and knows how to appreciate the gifts of life, who had power to raise from the ashes of suffering, rebuild your life and make the best of it . You really live by your words and teaching others too.
Thank you so much for sharing, may your rides always take you to amazing places and meeting the best people!

Happy New Year!

Nice 2008 pic! I see Fisherman off to the right with his Bumble Bee.......in '08 that would have been pre-heart transplant on the bike.

It's taken me a few weeks to catch up, but I have enjoyed all the photos, and connections that you have made with riders and others along the way. I was especially touched by you spreading a friends ashes in Antarctica! Ride safe and enjoy every day.
HAPPY NEW YEAR...... and many more to come.

Off smelling the flowers for a few days and off to page two it is

Had a great couple days on El Calafate !! Spent some more time with my Antarctic shipmates who are also traveling. and Also met up with "younger" Ollie who is an 18 British guy who is on an 8month ride to Alaska!!

The guy in the restaurant was funny..... I asked him to take our photo and he hammed it up about taking his photo....

Then we went out for dinner

Arnout and I took a walk in the bird reserve on the edge of town...

Lots of local birds including Flamingos

And Snipe (yup they are actually a real bird, not just a made up one )

Being in El Calafate... I am almost 1,000 KM north as the crow flies

I rode to El Chatlen to see Mt Fitz Roy.

Arrived to a cloudy, and grey afternoon. Settled in and was hoping for better weather

Lots more about this..... But I need some sleep, and will be back in a few days when I have internet again.

You are truly an inspiration Mark! I've been following this RR for a while, and each time I catch up I feel more committed to doing something (even a little bit) similar myself. Thank you for taking the time to share your journey!!

El Chatlen, Chile

Next morning I awoke to a beautiful but almost surreal sight. Mt Fitz Roy just over the hill from town.

I had talked to the owner in of the Pasado where I stayed and he said if it is clear, take the walk to Cerro Torre. It was a 11 KM walk up then 11Km walk back. I head out at 8AM, planning to enjoy the hike into this beautiful area.

I continue hiking into the mountains. Was great to just see the views of the mountains, plants, birds and enjoy the silence and peacefulness of the trail. I used to hike and climb a great deal in my youth, so this was great for me!

Lots of rocky mountains...

As I arrive to the first "Mirador" the clouds are sweeping about Mt Fitz Roy

And I see Cerro Torres in the clouds as well.

Lots of gnarled and windblown trees

Southern Beech trees with vivid green leaves

I continue up the trail and enjoy the views ....

Up and down the trail that takes through the forest and woods closer to the spectacular views of the mountains.

Huge valley on the way in....

As I get closer to Cerro Torres the clouds seem to be building, and the owner said if gets cloudy head for the main trail to Fitz Roy. I check my map and find a trail that passes two lakes and conects to the main trail..... Off I walk. I have a great anticipation of what I will be seeing close up.

Up up and over the hills I go

Camo Frogs along the way

Trail along the lake starts to show me a totally different view of the mountains.

I join the main trail for the steeper hike up to the Tres Largo at the base of My Fitz Roy

Have to cross over a few rivers

Enjoying the smell fo the surrounding mountains. Lots to see here.

And the hike up further, not for the weak of heart!!

after a couple hour hike up the very steep and strenuous trail. The reward!!

Wahoooo! (thanks to a fellow traveler, Brianna and Sedale... got another cool jumping photo)

It is a amazing place to just sit and take in.

As I hike out the trail, I meet another hike Named Drew from Boston. really great guy on a bit of a sabatical from work traveling here. We ended up meeting later for dinner and found out that His Dad is Ray, one of the Car Talk guys. I was just telling young James about them in Ushuaia.

But the visa on the way out were amazing!

Ate a really great dinner here.

I stayed in this little place. The view that afternoon was great!

Was a long day of hiking .... good solid 9 hours and I hiked about 30KM. It was truly amazing!!

Awesome stuff, Mark. Glad you had a chance to spread your legs and get off the bike for a bit. Looked like an amazing hike.

Stay safe.
