You are a lucky man Bart.
You should really repost that in day tripping cos it really needs a bigger audience than here. |

Yep I'd definitely be in. Not sure when I could make it p tho. Do you reckon those catapults & stuff are enoiugh to repel a Sth island invasion?

Be bloody awesome to see you guys up this way, Hold that thought, We would orgynise a full weekend of riding if you did and you would prob need to take the monday off to head back home but its something to think about.
When and if it happens it would be a topic on its own in the Adv thread but in the meantime, if there is enough interest from your side of the ditch then we will make it happen. Meanwhile we need to activate the committee for dastardly deeds and get them to study "Pirates of the Carribean" for some ideas on repelling pesky invaders.

Cnut hill
Mark and I had a look at Cnut hill last weekend. I hadn't been in there for a while so was looking forward to it. I took all the back roads and met Mark at Martinborough. It's always an interesting ride just getting there.
I had to try Bartons Line. Awesome section of gravel. Often used for Rally sprints. My old man had a ride through here recently with local rally hero Richard Mason in his rally car. It takes a bit to put the shits up the old man, but apparently that worked. ![]() On the way in to Aorangi Forest Park ![]() ![]() ![]() The stream was low ![]() The day was stunning, but getting hotter by the minute Mark getting up the first bit. It seemed rougher than usual. ![]() I had a couple of shots at the serious bit. First time I got bogged down in the loose rocks ![]() View was stunning ![]() Mark had a couple of goes (the dot in the centre) ![]() ![]() I got a little further on my second attempt, but the rocky surface was very loose and the heat was starting to take it's toll. I may have got up if I'd had another go, but I may have seriously injured myself also. Each time the bike bogged down, it slipped back about 5 metres and I only just controlled it. Mr short legs struggles on a bike going backwards. Time to head back down and find some shade ![]()

Shade was found by the stream. A quick lunch, and cool off. I hope the hanky was clean.
![]() Mark came up with the brilliant idea of exploring this other track. Great idea, but it was a bit overgrowen ![]() Often couldn't see where we were going in the long grass. Mark wanted me to go first of course ![]() ![]() This went on and on until we'd both run out of energy (we'd run out of common sense long before) ![]() Mark managed to loose the camera off his helmet. The heat was unbearable. Luckily we found it after about 15 minutes. The view of Cnut from the opposite ridge (mega zoomed) ![]() Time to head back to the stream ![]() More drastic measures were needed to cool off this time ![]() ![]() We'd both run out of water, so time to head out. An awesome run, and a great effort by Mark to get the KLR so far. The hill was probably the worst I've seen it. Most likely because it was so dry, the surface was like talcom powder. Next time I'll go after a shower of rain so the dust and rocks may be more glued together. What's the appeal you might ask? The track carries on for miles out to the coast with stunning scenary. It's just one of those rides I 'have' to do. I've been to the top previously, but only on my own. This is not an area to ride solo. Pic of the day...

Nice report Bart.
Judging by your photos I think the use of the term "Hill" is a tad misleading...Mt Cnut would be more appropriate! |
