Mission acomplished for Miguel Puertas
It is his ninth consecutive Dakar and the last 48 hours remind him only too well of just as exhausting a situation that he experienced on his first participation in 2004. At the time, Miguel Puertas raced to catch up time for 3 days and 3 nights before capitulating. Yesterday evening, when he arrived at the bivouac at La Rioja, Laia Sanz's water carrier was almost completely worn out. However, this time he is staying in the race. “After the day of stage 9, when I towed Laia almost right throughout the stage with a tow rope and we finished at 5 o'clock in the morning, we set off again after two hours of sleep. Due to the tiredness and because there was no longer anything at stake in the general standings, we decided to ride the stage together. We didn't have any mechanical problems, but our aim was simply to finish normally and recover to be able to get back into the pace of the race. The problem was that after 150 kilometres, the entire service core on Laia's bike (where the counters and Iritrack, amongst other things, are located) fell off. We think it was one of the falls the day before that damaged it. We attached it to Laia's camel-bag and set off again slowly. It weighs 10 kilos, so we took turns to carry it. As a result, we arrived at the bivouac at 10 PM completely exhausted. Over 48 hours and two stages, we only slept 6 hours”. After 32nd in 2010, his best result, and 63rd last year, Miguel Puertas, a Spanish air force pilot, has fulfilled his duties as an experienced and reliable water carrier. In Fiambala, he was savouring a plate of spaghetti, but also a job well done and just how far he has come since 2004 and the withdrawal in Bamako, on the 8th stage...

Two of our Slovak riders withdrew early in the race. Now Jan Cipka has published a little bit of his misadventures.
During the third day his bike came to a halt on km 165 and he wasn't able to get it going. The only rider who stopped and was willing to tow him was... Josefina Gardulski. Unfortunately none of them had rope so away she went.
She was all smiling and looking forward to go to Santiago. As we know that was not to happen... Hats off to Josefina

morning all... just off to sweep the track but i thought i would share the surprising mover in yesterday's stage... in a kurt caselli style blast knybanjo swept past the leaders, lead the pack brilliantly, and comfortably won the stage....

So we have Pyndon in at 46, 2 ahead of JC in the overall so he will like that

Manuel Shoestringo in at 76 th overall and maybe has 3 wheels on his wagon, but he's still rolling along

HRC - 9th & 10th overall with Helder and Javier, so if they manage 2 top 10 finishes I expect that will publically be a result!

JC down at 48 with his injury struggles, but he won't give in at this stage

The finish is on the horizon - but the horizon is still a bloody long way off

The Dubai Boys down to a Quad now (and maybe a truck) James West got pretty badly duffed up yesterday and looks today like he is out

Last year the Honda Europe Raly Raid team were shafted with starting numbers in the 70's - try to get decent times in Sardinia on those tight tracks with the dust and from back there! No reseeding either, even after an objection!!

I think if he is entered as Factory KTM there will be diddly sqwat the Italians can do about it

That's pretty much would Honda Europe thought when they entered also, they wern't best pleased but were pissing into the wind in getting reseeded. - we don't have one of those (a pissing into the wind that is) .

Ultimately it proved very dangerous over the week in trying to pass slower riders on those tracks - a 13th place overall was a pretty good result considering

The early phases of 2013 have already seen KTM’s vast motorsport division swing into action. Those currently not preoccupied with the clock in South America for the Dakar, or the timing sections of AMA Supercross tracks are testing, fine-tuning and pouring over logistics and schedules for the various racing calendars that are looming. KTM managed 12 world championship titles in just ten months during 2012; a phenomenal ‘take’ through a wide spectrum of motorcycle sport. To repeat the feat would be something equally astonishing.

The man pulling the strings from Enduro, to rally, to motocross to Moto3 is German Pit Beirer. The 40 year old was renowned for a tenacity and determination as a motocrosser that allowed him to be one of the great Grand Prix riders to emerge from his country. The same attributes line his methodology and attitude to the current Orange racing effort, which he has helmed for seven years. Here are some of his ‘pearls of wisdom’…


Finding and forging the best crew…

I’m not scared to bring the right people to KTM. Those like Stefan Everts, Tony Cairoli or Roger De Coster for example; this is not an operation that is just about me or my work. I always want to bring new ideas or directions to KTM and in every discipline I want the best people, not the second-best. This, for sure, is one of the key ingredients to success. I am lucky that [KTM CEO] Mr Pierer follows this philosophy because it costs money but I believe that employing solid racing people with some charisma and courage is very important. Also you cannot underestimate the human side of what goes into a team. The ability to bond and work together is vital and for me is the first priority ahead of qualifications, diplomas or whatever.


Making new limits and having the backing…

I always want to propose projects. We’ve been able to move through things like the 350, having a suspension link on the bikes and signing someone like Ryan Dungey. It meant going to the company and asking for a big investment, but we could deliver results. I ask for budget but I always keep to it and never stretch it; this is how I gained trust from the board. I asked, kept true and delivered, and now after a few successful projects I don’t need to prove certain things and I believe the board trust 100% in our motorsport activities. There are not many manufacturers where that direct line and personal relationship is so close and immediate. Mr Pierer is there for us and we are talking about a man who is mentally very strong. I will talk to him and he’ll think for ten seconds and give me an answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If it’s ‘yes’ then we get on right-away. I follow a similar approach, and will always give a direct answer to anyone when I can. I think this is one of the positive attributes of our company; that we can decide and move so quickly and beat other companies with time schedules.


The right mind-set…

Mentality. I hate to lose! I still look behind many details; I want that workshop clean, if a rider wants a small change on a bike then I want that we try to make it happen so that nothing is missed. We might not win a title because any racing season or sport involves some luck but I always want us to be ready to fight for one. I think we are very well prepared and I want to keep motivation in the whole group. Motivation is important. I’m not the kind of boss that cracks the whip. I like to bring in targets for us to hit and then I expect the people around me to push themselves towards those aims. I think we’ve managed that quite well.

The ambitious "Qatar Red Bull Rally Team" project managed to win five of the eight Dakar Stages they completed on their first trip to the desert classic. The specially designed Buggy had also put Nasser just a whisker off the overall lead of the race at the halfway point.
