Looking for some advise from you folks who know a lot more about this than I do. I am looking for a good used mountain motorbike for day trips. Thinking about something like a KTM 450. I'm not sure the drz 400 with have enough power for the grin factor. There is a 2000 WR 400 I am looking at this Sat. I'm no racer but sure like to get on it in the tight twisties. I also enjoy going off road with water crossings and light jeep trail riding. Sure enjoy sliding around the forest service roads at speed too. I use to just bounce the old KLR over those big rocks etc.. but the Wee in not the bike for that. Some of my friends have 250's and I have a real hard time following them on the Wee. I think a 250 would be fine for me off road but after riding my friends honda 230 I know it's not enough on road. I have seen some other threads kinda like this but my focus in more on ripping the pavement and keeping up with my accomplished friends on their KLW 250's etc.. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a lot of highway ridding. You will spend a lot of money and time getting the KTM 450 ready for what you want out of it. The 690 will do what you want, but will not keep up with the 250's in the dirt.. You need two bikes.
I have never heard of the KLR being called a WEE before. Must be a in helmet thing.

best deal around is a used 09-11 husaberg. either the 450 or the 570(sounds like you need a 570) fuel injected, great performance, and dont hold value all that well.
Get a set of 17 motard wheels for it and dont look back!

The 690 will not have any problem to keep up with 250s on jeep trails...

What about a KTM 500 EXC?

I don't know how "used" you are willing to go, but I ride an '83 XL600R that is a beast on and off road, and it is quite a bit lighter than the Wee. I put a 52 tooth rear sprocket on it, so top speed is about 70-75 mph now.

With you already having a road bike, I would highly recommend the KTM 350/450/500 bikes. If you are going to do a lot of slab riding, there are better bikes. I do use my KTM 525/530 bikes on the pavement, but mostly to get to and from trails. We did 75 miles of highway ,going to a trail head in Moab last summer. I wouldn't want to do that every day.
If you are going to slab it a lot, get the 17" motard wheels with a cush rear, a larger tank,and a HT oil cooler and you should be good to go.
Are you buying new or used?

I love my WR for that sort of riding and I think you'd really like the 2000 if it's in good shape. My seat gets really hard after about 50 miles of pavement but overall it is a very fun, reliable and easy to handle bike. I wish the WR's had 6 gears though... Speaking of which the RFS KTM 450-525's are great too. Just be sure to get that six speed if at all possible

I plan on doing quite a bit of tight paved mountain roads. The Husaberg 570 looks awsome as well as the KTMs. I have ridden the DR 650 and for me it just wasn't enough of a jump in power or performance. So far sounds like the contenders are:::
: husaberg 570
KTM lineup maybe 450, 525 or 690(if I could handle it in the dirt)
Huske. 511
Yahamha WR 400 ( kick start bummer ). I don' t want to be "that" guy that holds up the group cause i can't get my bike started

I got me one of these KTM 525exc 05 LORDY wat a blast coming from a Klr, sold the KLR and Tiger.

and then bought one of these for alittle bit of fun XR250r 1998

Kato not the best road bike but more than adequate, and the closer to home rides the XR250r is just pure fun.
