Again the source is DAKAR.com so if you have other data please ammend as required. This works out to 20.9% for KTM, 32.7% for YAM, 30.6% for HON and 40% for Husqvarna.

Well yes. And if you express those numbers in terms of percentage attrition (something which is obviously a lot more significant for the well represented brands than the bikes that are only there in ones and twos), the facts carry a stark message...

Brand - No. of starters -Attrition Rate

KTM - 67 - 20.9%
YAM - 52 - 32.7%
HON - 36 - 30.6%
HUQ - 10 - 40%
SHER - 4 - 50%
KAW - 3 - 0%
BERG - 3 - 100%
GG - 3 - 0%
TM - 2 - 0%
JING - 2 - 0%
BETA - 2 - 100%
BMW - 2 - 100%
SUZ - 1 - 0%
BULTACO - 1 - 100%


So if you want to win, you ride a KTM. If you just want to finish, then you could decide to ride a Kawasaki or a Suzuki, if sample sizes of one are your bag. But you probably want a KTM. It seems incredible that KTMs are both the fastest AND the most reliable (although you'd need to drill down further to work out what it is about the KTM that means KTM riders are twice as likely to get to the finish as Husky riders, and 50% more likely to finish than either Honda or Yamaha pilots)

After a call to ASO for an hour delay so I could finish the map:


They already have started a connection of 121km, and should start special @ 8:35 local
WP1 @ 36km
WP2 @ 75km
WP3, start neutralisation and refuel@ 97km
WP4 and end neutralisation @ 285km
Finish @ 346km

Followed by 158km connection, in total 625km

Distances are a bit odd, but I can't find anything else. If someone else has other numbers please share.

Whilst these 'statistics' seem ok from a distance, there are probably a few more variables that should be taken into consideration.
Such as:
- bike investment cost
- number of engine changes
- number of DNF's due to injury
- number of DNF's due to mechanical
Etc
