FYI, I just noticed Sena has released firmware v4.2 (beta/rc1) for the SMH-10. Anyone install it yet to test things out? According to the release notes:

Quote:
CHANGES
=======
- Multipoint
- Multi-language voice prompts
- Increased A2DP volume
- Improved compatibility with Bluetooth onboard audio systems and GPS devices
- Minor bug fixes in device interoperability, audio management and intercom

- Multipoint - What does this mean? It had multipoint pairing before
- Multi-language voice prompts - Useful if English is not your preferred language I suppose. Implies there was quite a bit of free memory in the unit before
- Increased A2DP volume - Needed! Presumably undoes whatever change was made betweeen 4.0 and 4.1
- Improved compatibility with Bluetooth onboard audio systems and GPS devices - Can only be a good thing
- Minor bug fixes in device interoperability, audio management and intercom - I wonder what the "bugs" were?
Would like to see selectable priority/mixing for various sources. Ability to set GPS messages to mix with or take priority over intercom for example. I'd be quite happy if this option was only available via the PC interface.

got both my SMH10's back today after warranty replacement for bent pins. the new block below the pins should help a lot..... But one of my pins is already stuck in the down position and all I did was open the box. Might be a little short on quality control

Just tried to download 4.2, and it seems to have crashed my SMH10B. I got an error about a bad USB interface, and now my bluetooth module won't power on. The Sena device manager asked me to email Sena Support with a diagnostic log.

I hope they get back to me soon.

This is why I never Beta test. I ride way too often and use my SENA everytime I ride so I really have no time for the unit to be down while I wait for a CS rep to get back to me. I was really happy with the turn around time on the unit I sent in for warranty work though.

Thankfully the Sena rep got back to me and everything is sorted out. No complaints about their service from me. :)

Whats the difference between the SMH10 and the SM5? I don't need fancy intercom or any of that jazz. Just bluetooth phone and music from same phone. I have a Shoei Neotec.

I have the same helmet. Greatest helmet I have ever worn

Anyway on to the SENA. IIRC the SM5 has a shorter intercom range and shorter battery life.

12 hours of talk time on the 10 vs 8 on the 5, and 10 days of standby time on the 10 vs 7 on the 5.

Range is 900 yards on the 10 vs 430 yards on the 5.

Sounds like the SMH5 will work fine for you as long as you don't mind the shorter battery life. The 5 is also about an ounce and a half lighter than the 10.

Thanks for that.

looks like the 5 has a wire for the speakers and mic, and the 10 "docks". Much like other units in the same price point of around $100.

The 5 also doesn't have the option of changing out the base that allows you to use your own ear buds instead of the speakers if thats important.

It would be very helpful to know what they advised you to do, in case we encounter the same problem.

Thanks,

-dan

Here's her instructions:

1. Re-install Sena Device Manager from our website.
2. Make sure to download correct version for your operating system found at the bottom of this page:
http://senabluetooth.com/support/download_document.php
3. Do not run the file right away, rather save it to the desktop. Then, Right click on the file to "Run As Administrator" from the drop-down menu.
4. Disable/disconnect any internal/external bluetooth hardware connected to PC like wireless mouse or keyboard - VERY important. For embedded Bluetooth module, you will need to disable from device manager.
5. Make sure to try different micro-USB cable as well as the one that came with SMH10.

Just my opinion, but unless you NEED the extra range of the SMH10, I would go with the SMH5.
The SMH5 is going to be more resistant to damage and does not use the spring-loaded contact <--> baseplate design...
