I use a marttiinihttp://www.ultimathule.fi/en/product_details.php?p=161 lynx carving knife with a carbon steel blade, nice weight and one very sharp edge.Bought in in Finland when I was riding through a few years ago and use it for most of my trips now and a large multi purpose swiss army knife which I never go anywhere without.I`ve had many of those over the years and they are for me an essential piece of kit.

I've been drooling over a Cold Steel True Flight as a survival knife, but for less money you could get a much better sheath if you get a GI Tanto.
I'd just have to re-grind the ridiculous (and useless as a skinner) tanto edge down. I googed the specs as I want a knife that will process (baton) camp/fire-wood too. The GI Tanto is only 1mm thinner than the True Flight. Next $25 I got burning a hole in my pocket I'm gonna have one... And I'm also planning on making knives. I burn wood all day and a knife tempered, treated and folded over like a Samurai Sword would actually be a byproduct of my wood stove... Damn. Life can be cool when you can live it free.

Big fan of Bark River & this one looks expensive but sexy:
http://www.knivesshipfree.com/index.php?cPath=465_80 I splurged awhile back & got a Fallkniven A1, great knife. The blade is a bit long & thick for most camp use but it's bomber. If I had it to do over again, I'd have gotten the F1 or the Bark River Bravo-1. |

I dont have any pics.........but I am still carrying a Kabar that I carried in the Southeast Asia war games in 1971.
My point is ....get a good sturdy knife and take care of it and it will last you a lifetime. Just sayin.........

The best survival knife is the one you're carrying. I've done everything from overnight camping to 14-day extended survival training with a folding Benchmade pocket knife with a blade length around 3".

There are a lot of fine knifes in this post, I am a knifeoholic and have many! Two things as ADV riders we need to consider, weight and propose. The Biggest Bang for the Buck is the Mora! It weighs nothing and is dirt cheap. They (mora) have a range of stainless knives as well as carbon, for those that are worried about rust. I carry these things in all my cars, motorcycles, tackle boxes ect. their biggest short coming is that they don't process wood very well. So if your looking to batton your knife find a full tang 5"-6" blade. Of course with that brings weight. I have chosen a Sven saw and a mora to pack in my Jesse's. Together they weigh very little and cost around $50. And if I lose them or break one they are easily replaced. Forget that Bussey and you will be backtracking looking for it!

![]() I actually lost it about two years ago. That's a stock photo. Sorry if anyone believed the knife in the photo was actually used to kill grizzly bears, chop down redwoods, saw through steel cables, skin an elephant, and stab random hobos.
