Could be any of 100 streams in Central Oregon. But since you're from WA, I won't even try and wager a guess as I've not ridden WA.

Little Naches? and if so, Cliffdell would be the first town downriver

Well you're right it could be any stream but this pic isn't any more obscure than some of the other pics that get posted up here.

Hint #1, it's not a stream, it's a river. But not the Yakima, Tieton or Little Naches.

Hint #2, I'm looking downriver. In other words, north.

Yer gettin the idea Starkmojo. Best as I can figger, the actual headwaters of this fork is 20 miles upstream from the pic. A river goes for 20 miles through this kind of country and still you can jump over it?

From the flood zone it probably looks a lot bigger at snow melt time.

Nope and nope.

OK, let's finish this.

The river fork in the picture as well as the main river itself are named for a fur trapper from Virginia.

There you go.

If you want to ride from Burns to Dayville the back way, you can go north out of Burns on the Hines Logging Road, aka FR 47 or the Hines-Izee Road. Go left at the intersection with the Izee-Paulina Road, then pretty quick you go right (north) on the South Fork John Day River Road which is technically still FR 47. I took this pic a little ways north of that intersection. Takes you right into Dayville.

What's kinda cool is realizing that those huge John Day Canyons downstream from here start out as these little canyons around these little streams.

Handy, yer up again.
