Rather Switch than Fight...?

With the sporadic performance of the stock 990 fuel pump and filters, I’ve often wondered why people do not upgrade the whole set up.

In addition to being over priced, the stock filters get plugged up very easily thanks to their exceedingly small surface area. This, in turn, causes the Keihin pump to cavitate (especially at tank lower fuel levels), which at very least causes fuel starvation above 5,000 RPM under load. If left uncheck, the pump will over-heat and fail. Not a good situation.

By comparison, I have changed the fuel filter once in 20 years and never had any problem with the pump on my 1991 Ducati 851. It too operates at 50 PSIG and has injector orifices just as small those on the 990. The stock 851 uses an automotive spec in-tank fuel pump about the size of a can of Red Bull and an in-line filter about the size of an 8 oz coffee cup. Turns out the filter is the same as used on a 1986 Mustang. There is no filter on the inlet.

If I were to convert the 990 back to injection, I would replace the in-tank pump and filter with a Safari blank off plate, put an in-line pump like the Edelbrock #3594 (~US$200) in the 950 pump location and figure out somewhere to mount a much larger fuel filter and regulator between the pump and injectors. Since I don’t have ABS, I would probably mount both under the seat for easy access. Per the Ducati, I wouldn’t use a filter on the pump inlet.

At 50 PSIG, the Edelbrock #3594 flows more than enough fuel. It is also about the size of a small Redbull can, so I’m pretty sure it would fit in the stock 950 location.

What am I missing here???



US$120 for two crappy filters and an o-ring on a system that seems prone to failure, especially when fuel is less than pristine, just doesn’t make sense on a true “Adventure” bike.

looks like your typical walbro pump.

is that a 'returnless' type pump?

they also make intank pumps with more or less the same capacity. I'm sure you can make it work if it fits and have the correct capacity (not too much or little)

Good question... I don't know.

If it is a "returnless" type pump, I would put the regulator in-line with and downstream of the filter.

If it is NOT a "returnless" type pump, I would instead tee-in the regulator downstream of the filter with a return back from the regulator to a fitting on the Safari blank-off plate.

For grins, I would probably put gauges on: one between the pump and filter and one downstream of the filter just before the supply line split to the injectors.

Just got my 990 ADV 2007 home and got one question for you guys. When I turn the key to ON position, I hear a very ugly noise and I'm pretty sure that the fuel pump is making it. Seller left the gas tank completely dry, so I thought this may be the problem. So I put in gasoline to top and let the bike run for 10min, but the ugly buzzing from pump is still the same. I changed my CBR600RR 06 for this 990 and I'm used to clean bzzzz instead of bzshchszshzzshc, or is that normal? You can hear the buzzing on video below, volume up

Sounds normal to me.


,.... oh and I have never had a fuel pump issue. (31,363 miles on a 2007 KTM 990) (Waterpump seal failed around 27,000 miles)

Thankyou both for your opinion. On video it doesn't sound so bad, also the bike is running OK, but it's very weird sound to me, so I will check the fuel pump anyway :)

Yes,
11 ADV spring of 12 w/ 4600 miles pump went bad, not delivering enough pressure to keep bike running.
Replaced under warrenty.

08 990 adv 15,000 miles and no problems with the fuel pump.

Hey,
Lots of dirt riding. My stock air filter was packed with dust. I haven't looked at the fuel filter yet. Just did my valve check, all in spec, and have the tanks off.

Question: Would turning the tanks upside down and dumping the fuel clean up the tanks? Flushing with fresh gas too. If there is junk from whatever wouldn't that take out the offending grunge and give a longer life to the pump filters? Just wondering as I haven't heard that mentioned. KJ

I've just clicked 4k km and have all the symptoms. Feels a bit sluggish and generally not great. Cuts out heaps while hot.
Called the guys at KTM in Perth. Didn't have much to say 'cept bring it in.
Will pull the tank and check the filters this weekend....

60.000kms - no problems.

gonna change out the filter set (paperfilter, + bag + seals) inside the tank now though, i think it hasn't been done yet. 90 EUR for the set...auch.

3 years and no issues. Replaced fuel filters as part of my routine maintenance. I carry a spare filter set on the bike and could easily change them on the road if required.
