Nope they are not really any thicker than if I just put the grip puppies on....the heating elements are paper thin.

As Simmons1 said.....its been done before....not breaking new ground here.

The tinkering is half the fun....

I know a lot of people that have gone this route with great success. Most of the people I know just use the manual switch and not a thermostat.
The set ups I have used the toggle switch on do not get as hot as using the dial switch.

And the best part is...if it doesn't work I can put back to stock in a matter of minutes and I'm out $30....

Its a KLR thing....you wouldn't understand....
I have a hybrid setup Oxford controller and atv heaters (note I wanted more heat on right hand) and they have been great!

i used a wire wheel to gently take the old grip of the throttle tube (plastic) the heaters are adhesive backed stuck them to the bars and tube grip glue and slide the grip on a little safety wire in the grip grouve again not too tight connected to Oxford control..

What make have you used?

Any comments or experiences on fitting / using them etc?

Late to this party, that's what I get for going riding instead of hitting ADV like Da Foole's goat every day.

I'm not a fan of the toggle switch and do like infinite adjustment, but honestly, a 4 position control would be fine for me too. I did however have some previous experience with installing a Heat-Troller knob in the left switch housing, so bought some Symtec grip heaters and wired them to a Heat-Troller. What I like about this set up is that I can adjust the heat w/o taking my hand off the bars. Easy thumb reach. And I can see the LED at night, so I can tell where it's at, level wise, not that it's a big deal.

Pic of control knob -

Instructions for the FJR, basically the same except the knob needs to be in a different spot due to the space available inside the housing. LINK

Instructions for installing the grip heaters HERE

Don't let them fool you. There is a reason the Rainbow is the symbol for the Gay/Lesbian community. Henry Ford used to say you can have it any color you want, as long as it's black. Waste of time to offer colors on something of utility. After all, how many black GSs do you see at Starbucks? It's not a coincidence...

Now that you mention it... Yeah!

Rode mine a few hundred miles last weekend. Have it apart in the garage right now fiddling with some farkles... And just to *TRY* and force one of the so-called "hard starting problems" I've been turning my ignition key switch on and off a whole bunch, starting it and only letting it run for a few seconds, sometimes only a minute, etc., etc., etc. Haven't had it anywhere near a battery charger, either...

Damn thing keeps starting up immediately, over and over and over.

Normally I wouldn't abuse a bike this way, but hey, it's all in the interest of science, right?

But since it just keeps starting and starting this is gettin' embarrassing...
