2013 Grand-Am Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona Photos
I was hired by the management company for Grand-Am and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge driver Matt Bell (who happens to be an ADV'er) to essentially shadow him (along with their other drivers) for the weekend and capture on film what goes into a weekend of racing for one of these drivers.
The idea was to focus less on the rolling shots and more on the lifestyle stuff, which worked out well. I was still able to get a few decent shots of the #51 car in action, but mainly I tried to capture what he went through when he wasn't behind the wheel. I haven't shot motorsports before on a professional level, so I felt more comfortable in that the main focus of this project was to capture him in more of a lifestyle setting. I also did a timelapse video of the last 8-ish hours of the race (7AM - 3:30PM) which is condensed into 4 minutes...here's the timelapse: http://vimeo.com/58493537 Here's what I ended up with for photos: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

NIce work, Ben! Love the shots of night racing. The time lapse video shows that Daytona Speedway never sleeps during the 24. I had a friend work with a private team years ago and while he had a great experience, what stood out was how freakin cold it was trackside at night. Thanks for sharing!

Very cool, love the pics. 24hr-Daytona is something I look forward to every year. I usually watch several hours of the TV coverage. Hope to make it down for it live someday. Each team could be the focus of its own documentary film. What they go through to just make it to the start is a story unto itself, and then add the race and what happens with the teams during the race, on the track or off.....WOW! Great stuff iMO. Sportscar racing has always been my favorite type of (car) racing not just because of the cars, but because of the people involved, especially in endurance racing. In both things, the cars and the people, it has lots of variety, and it makes a heck of a show.
Thanks for posting this. |
