txplants, I'm not camping on this trip. I currently need to replace quite a lot of my neglected camping gear, so its cheap hotels for me.

Listen, feel free to jump in and hijack this thread and ask your own questions. I am hoping to find time to see both the Petrified Forest and meteor crater, also, I just don't know if I'll have the time.

I like the idea of staging my bike, since the first day and half is spent riding through some really boring country. But you know what? That first day or two, I'm decompressing from work, and I'm simply enjoying the extended seat time on the bike. So while I'd like to have some of that time back (especially toward the end of the trip), it's not so bad. For me, riding is the point of the trip. If I just happen to be riding through some beautiful country, then that's just a bonus.

I might stage my bike when I go to the West Coast and Pacific Northwest, though, but for right now I'm just in recon mode. I'll ride out, see everything, get a feel for what I want to see again on a future trip, and plan my return visit.

Fantastic photos!!! And I'll head over to Smugmug and check out your photos when I have more time this afternoon. I do have one HUGE problem, though, with your trip photos... you stopped at Hooters and I did not see one single photo of a Hooter waitress!!! What's up with that? I haven't looked through all the photos, yet, so maybe there are Hooters waitress photos later.

I can't wait to get out there!!!

In fact 971 is coming right at you right now and would likely enjoy a PM on NWAR riding on his way home to Des Moines right now. He can give you tips on what to see. At any rate I think you would enjoy his report since it mirrors your interests.

The missus and I are planning a similar ride this fall. We are going to do the staging thing. The plan is to ship the bike to Las Vegas, fly out and ride it back. We are planning two weeks and even riding just one way it seems hard to fit in all there is to see.

I would reccomend against taking the freeway. The secondary roads through that area are such that you can still make pretty good time. The freeways are just too mind numbing for me.

I'm going to avoid Interstate 40 going out there. Coming back, though, I haven't decided yet. Depends on how much time I have left before I have to be back at work.

If you spend the night at Pagosa Springs, stay at the Best Western there. It has a drive in theater attached to it. You can watch the movies from your room

I actually do think I will be stopping for the night in Pagosa Springs. There, or maybe Durango. Great tip on the Best Western... I'll keep that in mind!!!
