Greetings from Spain! ... and sorry for my bad English ... If you do not understand me, you can translate my blog in Spanish: Diseñando la "Moto Trail" de Motostrail I think is better for yours, I wrote correctly my ideas and have more pics.
I write in three spanish "dual-purpose" motorcycle forums, In one of this, Motostrail.com, some people say me "hey, why not draw you a "dream", our "perfect dual-purpose motorcycle"?" Hah! A wonderful idea! I like draw motorcycles ...bad draws, but... First, we need say "who is perfect" in a dual-purpose motorcycle here in Spain. For a very much mountain, the better is a Enduro bike, of course. And for a long travels, a "Adventure" motorcycle... but... in the middle? -"One motorcycle that can ride in off-road, city, asphalt, or with very much bags and pleasant company" -"a bike between a Tenere 660 and Adventure 990" -"no, very much plastic and weight, better a bike between a XT 660 and SuperEnduro 950".... Well... and why not all? A bike like a KTM 690, with two cilinder engine, and a "fairing kit" you can install fast. Or perhaps a fairing bike and a "Enduro kit". Two-in-one motorcycle... if you want. ![]() A bike like a SuperEnduro, but 750cc and a fairing who you can remove... If you like this fairing (for 690 too) you can buy it here: jnacholaveda@gmail.com OK... START!!! The engine will be a twin cilinder, we can transfer ideas about "single" Enduro-Raid motorcycles. 750cc, 65 to 80Hp (two positions power commander). The frame in steel, like a KTM SX (or oldies Africa Twin :-D ) . 21" and 18" wheels, all types of tires. 220mm suspensions, progressive rear and remote control. 16 litres/4'22 Gal. fuel tank. ![]() For the "fast changes" Enduro-Raid I have a idea, something like a "box" (in spanish CAJA) with front light, turn lights, and cockpit. Only four screws and one electric connection. ![]() I took for the base weels, suspensions and dimensions (seat-footpegs-handlebar triangle) from a KTM Adventure 990. The engine was take from a Kawasaki Versys/Ninja 650. All other, drawn by me. ![]() The style design is only for you can understand ideas... I know some bike is ugly, but I need not to be a pretty bike... only what is this bike. Ah! old spanish motorcycle names... we have a past!! :-D : From Bultaco Frontera, OSSA Desert, Montesa Impala and Puch-Avelló Cobra. The FRONTERA wants to be a Yamaha XT 660, but with a twin engine, more powerful. Only this. A simple and easy motorcycle, for all road, all days. Like a modern BMW R 80 G/S, a similar idea, in this time. ![]() ![]() The DESERT wants to be a Yamaha Tenere 660 more powerful... or a small KTM Adventure 990. Lightweight (180kg/400lb?), with good quality suspensions and a good load capacity (new "water cooled" BMW R 1200 GS inspired). You can compare Desert-Frontera, with and without seat passenger. (Of course, the Frontera would be delivered two seats) ![]() ![]() But the better for me: if you want, you can have all two bikes. You can to have a Frontera or Desert, you can buy a homologated transformation kit, and in no much time you have the other bike. Good idea? What think you about? ![]() The IMPALA (three little Montesa Impala 175 crossed Africa from south to north in 1962) is a "Adventure" version: 25 litres/6'6gal fuel tank, big screen shield, long range lights, aluminum suitcases... Of course, all you can install all in Desert and Frontera models. ![]() And the COBRA... well, is a little caprice... The Puch-Avelló Cobra 75 M-82 was a 1982 small Enduro motorcycle, who was my teen dream... And this is my "XXI Century Cobra" :-D ![]() ![]() I hope you like it all... well, if is only one is correct too... :-D. I want your opinions, please, I need "other country eyes". Repeat, if you want see the desing step by step and why was made changes, I think is better see my blog (eight small chapters) and translate to your language. Also, you can see more pics and you can make them larger. Thanks for your time, guys... PULGAR EN ALTO

I like the idea of it being modular and to me it doesnt look bad in either form . As far as the technical aspect of the bike Im a bike noob so Im not much help there . I have wondered why hasnt Kawasaki put the versys motor in a upgraded KLR like bike to compete against the European bikes. But at 650 and larger I tend to think of Adventure bikes not dual sport but dual sport means something different to every one .

Hola
every great bike begins from a sketch on a scrap of paper and an idea Its virtually impossible for one man to build an engine. But a frame is possible. Your idea is great, build a prototype and ride it. Consider a Loncin or Jialing engine from China. They build engines for BMW and Honda so they can probably spare a few.

I remember those joke: A spaniard in NY take a cab and says "por-fa-vor, a Cen-tral-Park", (Central Park, please) and the driver says "en-se-gui-da. ¿us-ted de don-de es?" (ok, where are you from?) "de Es-pa-ña" "yo-tam-bi-én" (me too) "y si los dos so-mos de Es-pa-ña... ¿por-qué ha-bla-mos in-glés? (if all two are from Spain... why speak english?) Ha! Bad bad my english...

I'd use somehting other than an inline.
one thumper model and the rest Vs, or two thumpers (4xx and a 6xx) small, med, large(ish) 4xx 6xx 9xx make the 9xx a cross of a 950se and a GSA.... |

Well, I draw this bikes with a twin engine because is "similar" a single: inyection, exhaust, air box... all in similar position. You can imagine this MST with a mono or two cilinder engine, and of course much different displacement.

I like it.... Luke the modular/interchangeable parts, mix and match whatever you like.
This can be done, somewhat, with aftermarket parts now, my KLR650 an example of this. That being said, we all know the KLR is heavy and weak. Continue the work, it looks great so far. I'LL BUY ONE, or test a prototype for you.

Nice project. I think "high fender", with a rally cockpit/headlight is the way to go.
