cb360 stalls when in gear.

been battling the cb360 again, which is probably the worst time since its a little finicky to start in the cold, but i've got an annoying problem i can't figure out.

the bike starts up without a problem and idles fine. i let it warm up on idle for a good while. but as soon as i get on it and put it in 1st gear, it stalls out instantly. if i give it tons of throttle and put it into 1st, it will chug along for 20 feet but then stall out. does the same thing if i try and start off in 2nd.

i had it running fine a few months ago, it has brand new fuel and the battery has been on a trickle charger the whole time.

is this one of those deals where "it's always the battery" and i should try a new one? haha.

thanks. i've got good experience with the bings on my airhead, but my large fingers have a hard time fiddling with the innards of the cb360, haha. is that a take the carbs off and completely go through them kinda deal? i suppose they could use a good clean and rebuild anyway. or is it something i could do with them still on the bike?

i had also thought about the clutch. with the bike off and in gear i rolled it back and forth pretty good, as i read somewhere that the plates might be stuck. didn't help at all.

When you clean, VERIFY flow through ALL the passages with aerosol brake cleaner, then you know you've killed it.

well i can "power through" the stall if i give it a ton of gas, plus i don't think this bike has the kickstand cutoff switch, as my wife rode off with it down once, yikes.

Right, many times I've seen the idle circuit work, but the pilot jet clogged. OR, the idle circuit is plugged, the rider has turned the idle screws up high enough to start to run on the pilot jet or needle jet. Either way, clean and VERIFY flow, ride, smile, etc.

Adding another voice to the "clean the carbs" chant.

I went through this when I got my '82 Maxim this past summer. Cleaned the carbs to get it running. Cool! But it rode like crap. I chased other possible causes, while ignoring the advice from darn near everyone on another forum dedicated to the bike. And they were all saying to clean the carbs.

I eventually submitted to their advice and each carb was torn down and went into an ultrasonic cleaner for 10+ hours. Then I used a 0.025" wire to probe every passage, blew 130PSI air through the passages, and then back into the ultrasonic cleaner for another couple hours.

After all that, I found some tiny passages that had been completely corroded over and hadn't been visible before. More cleaning and probing! The end result is a bike that starts first try even when just above freezing, idles like a champ, and revs smoothly to the redline.

Moral of this story: There is no such thing as "too clean" when it comes to carbs.

Check for a torn diaphram, as well as checking spark on both sides. If you haven't replaced both plug caps and wires, also do that.

additionally, check the battery charge, if it is low older Honda's have a habit of dropping one cylinder, which will also cause the symptoms you are having.

well finally got around to cleaning out the carbs today. one of them was nice and clean but the other one had a couple of clogs and what looked like orange jelly in the float bowl. i would assume i have found the issue. it wasn't there a month ago when i cleaned out the bowls. there wasn't any "debris" or "dust" in it, but there was definitely like orange jelly. what the heck is that?

i also cleaned out the gas in the tank and cleaned out the petcock, both were fine and clean, no gunk or debris.

i took the battery out and charged it up inside. i took the charger off this morning and had 13.7v. i just checked it again this afternoon and it was down to 12.8v. what would be considered "normal"? i don't seem to have much luck with these batteries. i think this is my 3rd battery in the cb360 in 2 years. i've got an odyssey in my airhead and it has been perfectly fine and never an issue for 3 years now.

anyway, havent gotten around to firing it back up as i obviously need to put the battery back in and get new gas. so that will be a job for tomorrow along with carb balancing, etc.

Again, your problem is NOT in the float bowl. Did you read the link above? It's the TINY PASSAGES that clog... lather, rinse, repeat

i apologize, but "cleaning the carbs" meant that i took them completely apart and cleaned out every single tiny thing about them. blowing out all the teeny holes and also sticking a teeny wire through all of them.

my comment was that in doing so i found that one carb was completely clean and one was clogged up with "jelly".

all i was saying that what was noticable was that one of the bowls was full of junk and the other was not.

so yes i did read "above" and i assumed that "cleaning the carbs" meant "cleaning the carbs", ha.

Your battery voltages are "healthy" which is a step above "normal". My CB360 has a very small stator. I never had battery problems since any trip away from here is automatically a 30-mile or longer trip with no traffic on 45mph roads -- i.e. the motor can spin away long enough to give the little alternator a chance to charge the battery.

After a year or so I DID also replace the brake light and running lights with LED (although that may be a big investment, comparatively, for a CB360). I replaced the headlight with a reflector for H4 for convenience; I don't know if I saved watts there.

yeah that's been one of the main issues with the bike. it mainly just gets used for around the town riding. so it never really gets to the battery charging point. pretty much has to be put on the tender every day. hopefully i can get it all buttoned back up this afternoon and see how she's running. thanks for the help!

still trying to figure out how all that jelly-ish stuff accumulated in the one carb.
