My sons and I carry these Protechs every day and they get used.
My grandson is 10, has a Protech at his bedside.

Over the years we have had a couple of springs break so we sent them in with a $10 bill. Protech repaired them and one one the blade was getting worn so they replaced it while it was in their shop.

I lost a Brend 2 in Guatemala when I was working on my KTM along the road(left it sitting on the front fender). I like to think I made someone's day. I won't buy another black folder. The darn things like to hide.

The Protech company is no nonsense. The whole repair process happens in 5 working days.

I know they are pricey and illegal but I have never had a problem traveling with mine. Everyone is fascinated.

I don't do any thing illegal, I don't drink or smoke.

I carry bear spray for personal protection. I would never use a knife in a fight and consider any knife a worthless last resort for protection against humans. Knives kill people.

Used my bear spray it in a robbery fight on the highway in Russia and won, two against one. I was wearing my helmet and armored jacket and pants/boots. The men were young and poorly dressed.

Surprised them, yes I did. Sprayed them and ran for help while they cried.

I think it's some kind of cedar or sugar pine, hardwoods are not used that much in carpentry and woodworking in Japan. All the tapping you can hear in the background of that video is the sound of other contestants adjusting plane irons so as to get the finest possible shaving. Pretty amazing that they can get a consistent 9 micron shaving from a wood bodied plane where the blade is wedged into an angled cut in the plane body, and the only adjustments are made by careful taps on the front or back of the plane. And those guys know a thing or two about getting a keen edge on a blade, too. . . .

What I carry depends on where I am. My EDC is either the Dutch armed forces Victorinix or a Spyderco Endura 4, in ZDP-189 or VG10. The fieldwork I'm doing know has me carrying my Dutch Victorinox in the pocket, either a slightly-cut down Tramontina machete or my Valiant golok off the belt (depending on the amount of heavy chopping I'll expect to do), with a leatherman charge Ti in my bag.

My photo is just taken with my BlackBerry, so can't compare with PS-Rage's but I just picked up a Para-Military in D2 steel. Must say, I like it a lot so far. I have a lot of Spydy's and this one is near the top as an EDC.

D2 is a great steel too. Takes and holds a fine edge yet so easy to sharpen.

This is one of my favorite knifes - bought it while at sea from the ship's store (as well as a lighter of course) and since I was the ship's machinist I did all the engraving so I put my name and the end date of my enlistment on the other side (just so I wouldn't forget and re-enlist). Not a super neat knife, but irreplaceable to me - I stopped carrying it some twenty years ago when I noticed the print was coming off.

I'm going to wager the finger nail indention thingamabob being on the right side of the blade. Sorry I don't know the technical term for it.
