What the reader doesn't know...

What you can't see is that ten feet behind the bike, there is a 8 lane divided highway full of cars!

I finally did it. I took my 12 R1200R and removed the rear shock. I took the spring off and added a 304 stainless 3mm shim to increase preload or raise ride height. How ever you look at it.

Sag with me on the bike was 51 mm all the way low to 29 all the way high.

Now its 45 all the way low to 22 cranked all the way up.

I also got almost all the air out of the hydraulic adjuster. Before it got resistnce at the 4th click. Now I get resistance at the first click.

Can't report on what it did until its warmer than 6* f. and the snow goes away.

45mm sag is as low as I want to set it. Anything more is wasted (lost) suspension travel to me.

I have the same shim for the front. I need to ride it first, one change at a time.

Front sag now is 41mm I wold like 35.

I bought this R1200R in early september. Its a long winter.

R1200R: Which years for non-servo brakes, and reliable final drive?

I'm getting more serious about getting second bike and the R1200R has been on my list.

I've ridden a Rockster which I mostly liked, and the things I didn't I think are fixed on the 1200. Remaining issues for me:
1. I don't want servo brakes. Which years have them, and how can I tell by looking at or riding the bike?
2. I know there are some BMW years to avoid w.r.t. final drive, but I don't know which. Harder to service, more prone to fail.
3. Don't like the idea of service requiring many specialty tools, but I guess I'll have to get over that?

I expect to like the power, handling and ergos of all years. The sound too, though some say later models are better?

I don't believe any of the things you listed as concerns will be a problem on the R1200R. The servo brakes were never used on the R1200R and I have never heard of final drives being an issue. Fuel level strips and ABS pumps have been a problem for some owners.

Servo brakes were in use on 1150 and 1200xx from 2001 to 2006. It was a solution looking for a problem.

FD / driveshaft U-joint: luck of the draw. In 2007, the oil drain hole was relocated from 9 o'clock to the 6 o'clock location.

The 2011+ camhead bikes have a valve that opens in the exhaust manifold at WOT. I couldn't get a good listen because its hard to stay at WOT for long in the city and be legal

All are better as you go newer. I have a 2112 R and it makes my 1100RT seem like a dog. Stock exhaust sounds MUCH better. I get compliments on it.

Wunderlich makes a part to facilitate removal of the flapper. I've thought of doing it to mine, but also kind of don't care. The bike sounds pretty good when it's in the higher RPMs, and at low RPMs I'm not real interested in being real loud anyway. The valve and wiring are ugly, though - my friend's bike (earlier) doesn't have it and looks much cleaner back there. His Leo Vince pipe sounds a bit better, too.

Yeah, I'm all for being able to keep it quiet at low speeds. No need to piss off the neighbors.

Exactly. This is the first bike I've left the stock pipe on. Getting old, I guess. I did have one of my neighbors tell me I have "such excellent motorcycle etiquette" last fall. They're not fans of the loud pipes, it seems.

I figured there might be something like that going on too, and that helps me resist the temptation to yank it out of there.
