I am asking specifically about real world use of the Happy Trail Mojave Kit. I had a set of dirtbagz a couple of years ago, and they were tough, but not waterproof. That is important here in the SE.

Just subscribed to this thread as thinking these would be fun for a his/hers set up to replace scooters with. Wife not comfortable with a full on dirt bike or the height of one. She can ride her scooter anywhere but wants to look at some light trails nd these would be great for that.

I don't know, is it just me that finds the TW to handle like a pig? I recently
traded a '86 XL250R for this '93TW200 and find that on blacktop you have to push it around the bends. It must be those huge gyros they call tires. At any rate, I find it a capable steed, but I'm not convinced so I'm looking at a CRF230. Lighter by about 50 lbs and at my age/physical prowess that's a lot less to pick up.

I admit the my wife's TW is a little lethargic compared to my daughters XT, but both are better than my KLR in rough stuff. |

Heavy tires, heavy rims!
Its NOT a normal mootorcycle, but its great at going through swamps, sand and mud holes. I think I would like a crf230 more overall, or an xt225 for general off road use, but the TW will go through some serious stuff and make it easy. I went places on mine I would not take other bikes. Quote:

When I taught motorcycle safety the TWs were the easiest to do the figure 8 on. I think they handle great.

How old are the tire? I bought my '97 with 1100 miles on it and the original tires. They look great but they don't flex at all

Personally I wouldn't ride on a tire that is more than 5-6 years old regardless of how good it looks. Tire/rubber compounds denature & break down making them more prone to failure. It just is not worth the safety risk.

That is my point. They don't flex and they handle badly. They crack and de-lam.

Well, the tires do not hold air in, the tubes do.
The pressure is critical, low pressure works great in the dirt, i think I ran 7 psi or something like that, and it was fantastic in the dirt, sloppy on the street. I also found the stock front tire to be very poor at everything and a real dual sport tire made things much better for both street and dirt. |

The stock front tire sucks. There is a lot of options out there. I run a Pirelli MT21 on the front of mine, it works well on pavement and in the dirt.
