Gratuitous Mid-Winter Blues K11 "S" photo

Bike is currenitly on the lift for the winter, wheels are being painted (metallic silver) and Remus header ceramic coated ( it discolored something fierce) plus new steering head bearing and a once over on the FD. But here is a pic of it last spring in what I call "S" mode, no bag mounts and corbin solo seat, with a fresh coat of mystic red to boot.

After 95K miles on Metzlers, I an switching over to Radials per Duck's standard K LT formula (Avon on the back, Road Pilot on the front). I'm interested to see the difference. If it is anything like the difference I got swapping out my fork springs I'll be thrilled.

And here it is in "RV" mode, with two up with full camping gear for 2 weeks on the road.

And somewhere in the middle, during a weeklong blast from Boston to Tennesee via the BRP.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled Winter....

Looks like a nice LT. Depending upon how fast you ride, switching to radials will yield a bigger improvement than a spring upgrade.

I picked up this "can't get it to start" 59K FYK (Finest Year K) 1985 K100RT a couple of weeks ago for a grand. By March 27 (scheduled completion date) it will, except for the motor, be a completely different bike.

Congrats on the purchase Duck. Always look forward to your projects...this one is no exception.

Didn't even bother trying. Just verified that the engine turns and isn't seized. That's all I need to know. 59K is relatively low miles for a K and the bike appears to have been fairly well maintained for it's age and miles. (I could tell that it's had at least one clutch spline lube in it's lifetime.)

Gonna tear it down to a bare motor and rebuild the "new" bike from the ground up with reconditioned fuel injectors and lots of newer parts.

If I can't get it started after I've rebuilt it then I'll turn in my ADV decal.

It might have been a bad front coil. I tested the resistance across the outputs today and it's an open circuit when ideally it should be around 12.6 Kohms.

Yes and no:

1 - The early K100s had six rivets on the output shaft absorber that would give out at about 100Kish. As long as you're not 1,000+ miles from home when they fail (gradually) you can swap in a newer 12 rivet version.

2 - The speedos were flaky but that's not unique to 85s as they didn't change that until the late 80s.

3 - Same with the "smokey" rings but, again, that wasn't unique to the 85s and wasn't "cured" until the later 80s.

4 - The early 85s had "hotter" Euro cams that produced 5-7 more HP (at higher RPMs) before the US models were modified to meet CA emissions standards.

5 - The nakeds and RTs had no fork brace which compromised the front end a bit but that's not unique to 85 models either as all nakeds and RTs had that, even post 85.

6 - The passenger handholds were built into the seats which were kind of sucky while the 86+ bikes had them built into the tail cowl. This can be rectified by swapping in an 86+ tail cowl.

Any vehicle is going to have teething issues in it's early years. Does it make it the worst? Matter of opinion.

It is the great grand-daddy of all K bikes so it's got that going for it.....

Meh, if I wanted to get dirty I'd just go out and buy a DR400.

I do know a local guy who's building a K75GS though.

I'm currently working off and on on another K project that should be done in a month or two. Won't be anything particularly spectacular or groundbreaking but nonetheless something I want in my stable. Film at 11:00....

There are a few out there. A couple of the better looking ones:

This could be good with a little more effort:

Well I guess it didn't happen then.

It's not like making a K75GS is something new or revolutionary. If you do some Googling you can find several of them.

Last time I saw it was last spring when I went by his place to swap some parts with him. He was making progress on it and had some big-ass forks (Honda, I think) on the front end already.

Next time I hook up with him I'll see if I can get some pics for you.
