V-Strom racks mocked up and ready to be dissassembled for full weld-up...
![]() I normally start with the exhaust side first, because it's usually the hardest side. Usually. The 'Strom gave me a Wee bit of a problem. Pun intended. ![]() There's no access to the subframe from the left side for a top mounting point. It's all clad in bodywork. Hmmm... ![]() The right side top attaches to the muffler mount. Then I tab off the R hoop and essentially make a back strap like soft bags use. I weld in 2) 5/16" bolts that align with existing holes in the OEM top rack. ![]() The supplier was out of .065" 5/8" DOM, but they did have some .125" on hand. A bit heavier than needed, but the whole job took about 14', so not total overkill. Definately stronger as well. I hope you don't mind, Kevin. ![]() ...and I shot myself in the foot when I upgraded my bender to hydraulics. My 5/8" DOM shoe was the tightest radius I could buy. Not a problem on manual bending with a solid mounted pedestal. My bender is now on wheels. Just use the hydraulics, right? Well, the small radius means no drive pin holes to use the ram. So......a larger radius 5/8" shoe is on the way - with drive pin holes!!!! ![]() Let's adapt and overcome by strapping to the table. Yeah. I had to sweep back there anyway. 1/8" wall DOM x 5/8" O.D. is HARD to bend with a bender on wheels. Doh!!! Good thing I spent all that money and time upgrading. I haven't used the hydraulics yet!

![]() BTW - rack weighs 9lbs altogether, and will be slightly less once I shape up all the tabs... No worries on weight, and plenty strong. kirkster70 screwed with this post 02-18-2013 at 02:45 PM |

![]() Tabs shaped up with a 40 grit flap wheel. ![]() I like bolting everything back together after fully welding all joints to check for warpage issues. ![]() All looks straight. ![]() Time to pay Mr. Powder Coater another visit!

Sweetness!
Did you catch that mouse that chewed the hole in my first aid bag? Hopefully I froze him out of there on the way up to your place Saturday morning. |
