safety beacon
has anyone seen this neat little gadget?
http://www.safetygearonline.com/home...re-350-compact I have a few of the pancake shaped safety flares that are led and come in a nice bag, but the E-flare is much more versatile.

I have a few glowsticks in my toolkit. I use them quite often to give direction or to light up a tent.

i definately think it's a good i dea to have something to help alert drivers coming up to you if you hare in trouble on the road day or night. but this i only good if somone doesn't have their face buried in their super phone or playing with their gps.

I carry road flares in a baggie in my pack, both snowmobiling and on dirt... crack the old ones off every year, replace them with new ones.
Visible light is nice if you're broke down on the road, but if i'm in the backcountry... thermal/IR and the capability of starting fires is nice. Little bit of gasoline from the tank, 15 minutes of hot-as-fuck flame from the flare... if you can't start a fire with that you should just stay at home. ![]()

i've heard that drunks, fixate on lights. not saying it's going to happen, but is something that should be considered. personally i like to be off the road before sunset.

I prefer road flares, but there's a risk of fire in dry areas. if i was lighting a fire on a rainy day i would definately want a flare to help get it started.

I have carried one of these for years in my backpacking survival kit. Especially if I end up rolling into a ravine or down a slope, a bright light will help to find you in our thick forest cover.

Things like this always remind me of '127 Hours'
Would the beacon have helped? Maybe. Probably wouldn't have hurt, and he could have tied it to the end of the rope and tried to wing it up to the edge of the ravine. Another item I never leave out of a hiking pack or jacket is a whistle. How long can a man scream for help? 1 hour? 2 maybe before you start to loose your voice and your mouth gets too dry? How long can you blow a nice loud whistle? WIthout a doobt, longer I should bet.
