Yeah. Sure.
![]() I wish my bike had a belt that lasted normally around 40k to 50k (real owner experience) miles and could be replaced for 430 bucks or so. In that time I have pumped about $100 in chain lube, installed two sets of chains and sprockets, spent $30 or more in chain cleaner, a few hours of swearing while cleaning the back wheel, trying to scrape of old chain lube from my panniers, frame, boots, pants, top case, ... damn, I hate chains. |

..and most will change out 2 sets of chains/sprockets in that mileage so the
price will be about the same. I got the same "issue" with my scooter. The belt costs almost $200, while for a similar Piaggio scooter it's $100. The only difference is.. mine lasts twice as long.. and you'll constantly see people bitching about the price of the belt. Some people can't do math.

Well said. Lobby made a statement that he would not spend his hard earned money with a company that he felt charged way too much for a belt that other companies charge a lot less. No whinning, bitching or anything else. He was just standsing on his principles. I guess some of these people don't know how to distinguish a person with character and just being a character.

We're on a forum, and we're here to tell other people they're full of it.
So get with the program. ![]() On a side note (and on subject, miraculously), how is this bike so different to the 800ST that it's causing this much interest? It's like when Suzuki took the Bandit 1250, put on a bit more fairing, added boxes and a bigger screen and called it a GSX1250FA. It's still the same bike! ![]() I always liked the F800ST, but the "piston slap" issue scared me away in 2007/08 when I was considering replacing my Ninja 650R with the 800ST. That and the shockingly high price with a few extra bits (ABS and heated grips + board computer). You could have speced out a 800ST almost up to a basic R1200R price here. That's just plain wrong.

Never understood how that works, it's almost like they don't want you to buy their cheaper model. If that's the case, why sell it?

Mercedes and Audi. My old man owned 5 Audis and we were always shocked at the price of addons. With Mercedes, you'll often be shocked what they even consider to be an addon! Remember a friend buying a C class in 2002.. he had to pay extra for air conditioning, and it was a $40k car.

GS F bikes hold their value quite well. The F800s on the other hand had engine issues or something along those lines.

All of a sudden I hear from my purchasing agent that Continental rubber wants $200 for each belt. What's the first thing I do? I set a meeting with Continental to "discuss" this problem. I'll discuss, they'll listen. It goes something like this: "You're the biggest tire / rubber maker in Germany and this is the best you can fucking do on a piss ant belt? You're full of shit! Now quit trying to screw me and come back with the correct price. Else I'll call Michelin, Goodyear, etc and find one that CAN meet my needs!" Take this to the bank: there isn't a single motorcycle manufacturer who is going to let a belt manufacturer take them hostage on little part like a belt. Not one. ![]() Therefore BMW is NOT getting screwed on the price of that belt. That would be impossible. Therefore BMW is screwing their buyers by pricing that belt the way they have. ![]() BTW, wiper blades for a 2007 BMW 335i are $91. Yep. Poor, poor BMW. Let's all reach into our pockets and give them our money.

I do consider it being taken advantage of when they could have used a more commonly available belt for half the cost and it wouldn't have cost them any more R&D money than they spent to come up with this weird ass belt that no one on the planet but Continental makes.
When you have belts on bikes that make WAY more torque with a replacement interval of 100k miles on their belts (or lifetime belts) and if they do break it's 200 or 250 dollar belt, yet Beemer wants you to replace your 500 dollar belt every 24k miles (about once a year to a year and a half for me) that my friends is getting hosed ![]() If all other belts on planet earth were almost 500 bucks a pop I wouldn't care but oh well. I like the bike and I'll keep it. And when I put the spare I have on it when the Original belt breaks that will probably carry the bike till the time I decide to get rid of it.

And would be a basic model re: engine and addons.
