I haven't checkd the paypal/ ebay guarantee, but if all it gets me is the $53 back then why bother. The chepaest Pegaso wheel on there now is $150 and BMW is $300. I'm checking price of spokes and lacing now at a bicycle shop (reckon it'd be cheaper than a MC shop at $300 per hour over here). You (or anyone else) wouldn't happen to have the lacing offset data ?

Ah I love the outlook there Gravel Seeker, was thinking recently of putting the two pic's of your repair efforts in Oz somewhere up on my web site with a caption about how you fitted into the Oz way (the one doing the rear end and the one of the ladder supporting the bike). Anyway I could not find a suitable place to put them and a good caption was eluding me

Oh and CBOA is Cheap Bastards of America, the boys use it a lot over there, applies easily to us in Oz

Oh yeah that's right. Actually heard that one before when think about it.
And, yes, it most def aplies to me - I'll hapily spend 100 hours making something myself instead of spending $100

Spring may very well be on the steps knocking, but winter aint too keen to let it in at the moment.... Ahh yeah, maybe I haven't mentioned it, but the bike is parked outside....

Beautiful clear skies and -17C (1F) when I left for work yesterday morning at 6am, -5C (23F) now at 10.30am, but snowing

So won't be fucking around with the wheel today

Didn't have the patience to wait any longer.... was a bit cold and riding season seems awfully far away with -20C (-4F) this morning when I left for work, but the good news is that it doesn't look like it should be too difficult to make the Aprilia 19" work on the BMW.

Left hand side is pretty much the same

If I can figure out how to remove the speedo drive while keeping the bearing, I should be able to have a new spacer made up at a local shop. Will try to make it a one-piece, but if that's too dear I'll ask them to make it two pieces; one spacer and one large thivk washer to fill the hole in the hub. The closest machine shop to me (500m) is an aluminium specialist so they could possibly make it two pieces on a lathe and then just weld them together. Guessing it should be a tight fit to prevent sand and water to get in to the seal, or don't you guys think that makes much of a difference

What about having the tabs ground off and a spacer made that replicates the speedo housing??

My KLR has a very similar speedo setup, IIRC didnt look like itd be too difficult to make a solid spacer and ditch the housing.

That's not a terrible idea, and while we're at it, perhaps one could just buy the damn thing for €20,-

But I wonder what happens if you just chuck it on there without the cable. Will the whole thing spin with the wheel ?

maybe I'm not getting it, but what if you just replace the bearing, seal, lock (snap) ring and inner spacer (if needed) with BMW items. They are all fairly inexpensive wear items...

I would but the hole in the hub itself is "much" larger on teh Aprilia so I don't see how the BMW stuff would fit

If you look at the distance between the 9 small holes surrounding the seal and the seal you see that the distance is almost double on the BMW hub than on the Aprilia hub.

hmmmm


maybe you can find a dust seal with the aprilia OD and the BMW ID from a Mcmaster Carr type place? Worst case, if you use 2RS bearings, you probably don't need the seal all that badly.

Is the groove for the retainer ring more outboard on the aprilia wheel, or is the spacer a different length bmw to aprilia?

On my KTM it just sits there, the fork tube keeps it from spinning. There should be enough compression from torquing the axle bolt to keep it from rotating.

That would probably work. On my KLR it just pushes up against the fork leg, torqueing it down holds it in place. Those 2 little tabs just spin the worm gear inside. I actually (try not to laugh too hard) went about 2 weeks, 1500 or so miles, with no speedo on my KLR....all because I never checked that I had hooked the cable back up.
