I personally think that KTM built this bike to compete with the 1200gsa. I'll never own a 1190 because I don't think it can do what the 990 can. I'm sure the 1190 will be awesome and I'm excited to see how the EFI is, but I would never take an 1190 to the places I've taken my 990.

The only limit, only in the extreme off road, if we compare it with the 990 adv R is the ground clearance. |

BMW's are great if its a huge road bike disguised as an SUV is what you're after...with shoddy suspension, built in kickstands/rut skis/ rock magnets, silly fixed final drive ratio through a proven unreliable final drive gear, a tranny that feels like a box of marbles made with straight cut gears that beg to disengage, that wonderful dry clutch that requires whole bike disassembly to get at along with its cleverly designed hydraulic slave engineered so that when it leaks, it'll pour oil directly on the disk. Then there's its myriad of computers. There's the one that keeps thieves and yourself from operating the thing when its antenna ring burns out, the one that reengages the abs when the battery is low if you turn it off on start...this lovely feature almost killed me once. But at least servo abs and its complex ability to rob you of the ability to brake when the battery is dead, or the banjo bolt plugged, or the ball valve corroded, etc...is gone along with untold numbers of foolish riders who had trusted it...I was almost one of them once too.
For everyone else, there's the KTM.

I've owned almost every modern BMW GS of the last decade. I switched to KTM and have never regretted it. I always was nervous about the BMW electrical and the final drive, then with the F800 I had valve cover leaks and worried about bent rear shock mounts. Mostly I always had to worry about capability, and ground clearance. Riding a trail 70% of the way only to turn around because the jugs wouldn't clear the two rocks coming up ahead. Not being able to gear the transmission for a specific mission was a bummer too.
Sure with the KTM I have a different set of worries but I never worry about capability and I've taken it on longer trips than the BMW's and had no problems (I do my own maintenance). The BMW got me places but I was more tired and having less fun versus the KTM. I fought it for years, spending money trying to make the BMW more like the KTM. It was cheaper and easier to just buy the KTM. If the 1190 lives up to the hype its going to be a great bike. The GS will be another GS. It won't be a leap forward in terms of ability, it will be an incremental update (YAWN). |

Cos I don't want to look like everyone else!!
I rode GS's before Ewan and Charley did their thing and that was fine.............................for awhile, then more and more wannabe Dakar riders started turning up. Good for BMW sales but bad when you are sat at a set of lights, look across and the guy is on exactly the same bike, same colour, same riding gear - only differnce was the colour of the same helmet ![]() That was 2006 and the German Panzer had to go, have not looked back since. KTM rescued me from wall to wall GS mediocrity and boredom. First the 990S then the 990R with nearly 70,000 miles of 'Ready to Race' fun between them. Impersonating Meoni overtaking GS's on the inside or while stood on the pegs was worth every surprised reaction ![]() Buy another GS Adventure? I would rather stab my eyes out with a blunt garden fork ![]() My new 1190R arrives early April and I can't wait ![]() But let's hope its not too popular, or in a few years I'll have the same problem and that could lead me back to the dark side and a Starbuck's carpark and who would want that?!?

Some like a Beemer and others prefer a porno toy from Mattighofen.
I'm sure there are KTM riders that went to the Gspot side and still being happy about it. Altough i find it hard to imagine....

KTM! By Far. I been in places like I'm sure non GS owners can be without compromising the reliability of the machine. But also for you; at your current location, you need to take in consideration dealer service.. I know Federico Henao who owns a KTM dealer back there, but not sure if currently have more options in Medellin.. Also BMW's ones .. I guess the only is "Autogermana"
