If you're only passing through, the cheapest option is to carry a sleeping bag and lay it out on top of the table under the shelter in one of the rest stops. I've done it many times - even spent at least a dozen nights on the floors of bus shelters when crossing Siberia/Kazakhstan.

Gulgong is on the itinerary on the way from Melbourne to Maryborough. Has anyone any recommendations re. Gulgong Hotels to stay at, or stay away from?
Priorities are: 1. Good accomodation (clean rooms, sheets) and plenty of hot water. 2. Undercover parking for motorcycle and trailer. 3. Minimal tradies.

Joes Garage, Hobart. Very bike friendly, even if headed a little too upmarket.

Captains Flat hotel is still open. A few of us stayed there about 6 months ago while they were in the middle of replacing the roof.
It's a beautiful unmolested hotel with great history. Apparently the pub was intended to be built at Bondi, but was built here instead, so the publican says. Coming into Captains Flat from the south, the first view of the hotel looks like the Titanic stuck in the middle of a desert. ![]() It just doesn't look like it belongs there. Great hosts, great rooms, bike parking in the old stables. Cooked breaky, and dinner. Good value. No association etc...
