The Warthog is 98% complete. I need to make a longer kickstand, wire the heated grips, add saddlebags and side covers, and I'm waiting for a new front brake line. Other than that, all I need is spring break-up so we can get to the road and she's ready for the Alaskan Highway and beyond.
![]() Ground clearance from the skid plate is 9 inches, a bit more than what I was aiming for but well within the ballpark. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Like the D/S attitude.
A Sportster with clearance!
There is hope yet. Don't let HD copy you though. Be unique, just like everybody else! Funny, I'm trying to streetify my KLR a bit. Still need a commuter more than a dirty adventurer... But yours is a nice inspiration! |

kickstand
Since I don't want to carry a 4" block with me when I ride, I needed a longer kickstand. I saw one possibility on ebay off an Aprillia dirtbike, but I decided to first try to extend the stock one. I used heavy-wall pipe that would fit over the stock kickstand and then put a slight bend in it. I cut off everything I didn't need from the stock one but left about 3 " to fit inside the extension. The only downside to the whole set-up is that it hangs slightly low and reduces my ground clearance by about half an inch.

All stock HD Kick stands kind of hang down and drag easily. It will not drag with your ground clearance but it could snag on something. It will probably be OK though.
How about a pic of it in the up position so we can see the issue, maybe someone will have a simple fix.

Here's the kickstand in the up position. I could get it to tuck up further if I do a side bend, but I worry about the lateral stresses this would place on the sidewall of that pipe once the weight of the bike is on it. Should I decide to change it, I think I may just have to weld a bracket for some kind of dirt bike kickstand that will retract more up alongside the swingarm.

Yeah that is a tough one how it rolls down right there.
I agree a bend upward which would be a bend backwards when the kick stand is down might be a way around it, but could weaken the stand with all of the weight on it. If you are using 0.120" wall DOM tubing of 3/4" diameter I think an S bend would be strong enough. What if you just made it straight instead of the arch in it and then angled the foot pad to hit the floor flat? That might lessen the drop down when up???

John, if I remember correctly, the pivot point for your stand was right about where the frame starts to curve up behind the primary case. Does the kickstand then rest alongside the swingarm? Any problems reaching it with your foot?

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! Now if I could just get out of my driveway and the ice covered roads would hurry up and melt.
